Resolve Scopes Change in version 18?

PostSun Mar 26, 2023 1:53 pm

I swear that previously when using my scopes I would set 10bit waveforms to Video Level, add my reference levels to 64 and 940, and this would allow me to see how far beyond pure white and pure black I am pulling the image. But now the waveform clips at the reference level when I am viewing the Video Level scopes. But if I set my view to Data Level, I can pull the image beyond the reference levels.

I was googling to see if I am crazy, but all mentions of data level vs. video level with reference levels point the scopes working as I thought. (Like this video:
).

Did something change with scopes in the release of 18?

Do you by any chance have a LUT in the chain?

In Video Monitoring, Data Levels, there is an option to "Retain sub-black and super-white data".

The "retain sub-black and super-white" does not make any difference on the scopes, I've tried switch it on and off across several projects..

In this screenshot you can see when in Video Levels my data crushes right at the reference level of 64 and 940. If I switch to data level it crushes at 0 and 1023. It makes sense that data levels extend farther than video levels.

But what I can't figure out is why the Video level representation just stops at the reference levels and doesn't extend beyond like in all the manuals and instructions say it should....

This is not restricted to one project, same thing happens across all projects and all computers. Which is why I thought maybe there was a change in Resolve 18 as I don't ever remember it working this way.

What do SMPTE Color Bars look like? I generally use those to get a feel for where the scopes are.

The same thing is represented with color bars... its not that the image on the screen is showing incorrectly, its just that the scopes are behaving weird.. at least from what I remember and as far as I can tell from how they behave for everyone else.

Nope, everything is clean.. works same in all projects and all computers, all color settings. It just is how scopes seem to work now. Which is why I am confused.

I'm seeing the same in Studio 18.1.4 on Windows 10.

But...changing the Scopes between Data and Video doesn't change the signal, so this seems normal to me.

in those images i see that the bars should carry the pludge (as stated by the scope itself) but I dont see it in the GUI image...

That's suss.....

Using 18.1.4 Can confirm the OP's find. Suspect I have recently watched the same well presented tutorial (which is about 2 years old). So may be a recent change. Searching the manual (sub-black) shows no reference to the scopes.

In case it helps, this is what I see.
I have brightened the images to make them clearer.

The signal will clip in colour managed projects or when using colour space transforms if you have tone mapping set to anything other than None.
