ATEM Tally light app for Android smartphone

PostThu Oct 20, 2022 11:47 am

Hi everyone!
I would like to introduce my papplication TallyMaster.
It allows you to turn your Android smartphone (android version 8 and above) to Tally Light and Intercom unit.
All you need is to connect ATEM switcher and smartphones to same network (Wi-Fi) router with same IP subnet.
I had tested it on ATEM Television Studio HD and ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K.

You can download it from Google Play

Does your app rely on multiple devices connecting to the ATEM or is there some kind of proxy server running?

The reason I ask is that ATEMs tend to crash with too many connections - especially WiFi devices.

No proxy used. Direct connection to ATEM only.
It is very curious info about ATEM crashing when multiple device being connected! How many devicec i should connect to ATEM to crash it? I want to try to hang my ATEM.

The older ATEM models could only handle 5 connections, and if a connection was dropped (rather than closed) that would continue to take up one of those slots. This meant that any sort of wifi connection, even from the official control software could often end up with the ATEM refusing to accept any connection.

The current models have a higher threshold, but BMD don't publish what those connection limits are, and there's no way of finding out from a live system how many connections are still available. It might be that the current models the limit is so high that it's not worth worrying about, but many people who have used ATEMs for a while are concerned about it still - it's really inconvenient to have to reboot your switcher halfway through a broadcast because you've suddenly found the limit.

(Side note - when they stop accepting connections, this is all that happens - they don't stop passing video / audio, they just stop being controllable)

That's a very useful information! I ran into an issue where my Atem Mini Pro was unresponsive for a few minutes during a livestream. I had 3 DIY Tallys, Atem Software control and Bitfocus companion running (streaming through OBS) and suddenly wasn't able to switch cameras any longer. The Atem Mini continued sending the signal via USB and OBS keot streaming but i was stuck on the curretly active camera. After about 2 or 3 minutes i was able to use the hardware switches on the Atem Mini again but Bitfocus didn't communicate with the Atem Mini any longer and the Tallys also didn't change.

Could this have happened because of dropped connections?

Just want to revive this thread because I recently downloaded the latest update for my ATEM mini Pro (9.5.1).

The release notes say it "Fixes an issue that could cause a loss of camera control". Can anyone confirm if this fix is related to the described issue with too many connections?

Separate issue . The connections issue has been endemic to atems.

Camera control (i.e. remote control of colour balance, exposure, black level etc.) is implemented either via a data channel on HDMI or a everse-vision SDI feed TO the camera I think - not via IP.
