Hands on PYXIS (first impressions, Cine EVF, battery test)

PostFri Sep 27, 2024 6:38 pm

The Pyxis arrived!

In this video I want to share with you my first impressions of the camera, especially of the body itself, how it compares to my BMCC6K full frame and why I am personally very excited by this new release.

I will also talk about some of the accessories including the new Blackmagic Cine EVF and the cage I have.
And I also do a quick battery test!

I am sure a lot of you have questions so I’m happy for this video to be a discussion about this new cam so feel free to comment on the video and I will do my best to answer in the comments or in the next videos :).

Cheers,
Flo

here in the states, I've seen a few people on instagram that live in/near LA have one already.
I hope the Midwest gets some shipments soon!

THANK YOU for showing a side-to-side comparison between the 6kFF and the Pyxis. The size (and shape) will definitely help with packing and rigging.

It seems like things are moving fast now with Proav and CVP shipping or getting some stock so I am sure BH and the other big US ones will follow very soon if they haven't already!
And no worries man, I was actually by the difference between the two and only realised when I had them side by side.

Yes, the side by side physical comparison was interesting, with the DSLR-style body looking larger and more awkward to work with.

Flo, I don’t know if you’ll be able to tell if there is a difference in the images the cameras produce, but you might want to comment on that when you’ve had more experience with the Pyxis.

Good overview, Flo. It validated my purchase of the BMCC6K. I guesstimated that the Pyxis would be just a little too big back in May. When the sale happened I jumped on that and now that the Pyxis is here I'm glad. I always appreciate your low key and informational style. It's nice how you lay things out.

I have found that the BMCC6K fits in my hand perfectly for carrying with a strap, a cine-saddle and fits easily into and out of my bag for on the go shots. As Cine Dailies pointed out on youtube, carrying this in urban areas looks more like a dslr and therefore doesn't shout out, "Look at me, I'm a cinematographer with expensive gear!" I've been shooting in fentanyl addled areas and people barely pay attention to me. And thankfully, not buying the Pyxis means that the oh-so very sexy viewfinder didn't wink at my pocket book. The one thing I do like about the Pyxis over the BMCC6K is the side mounted display. When on a tripod that's where I stand and that screen would have been perfect for me. I'll live.

Now, instead of the daily, "Is Pyxis here yet? Is it here yet?" threads on the internet, people will be asking those oh so relevant questions that I've seen on reddit. Like, "Does it need a lens? My footage is black. Flo was using his without a lens!" And I'm sure we'll see people posting how it's got miles better image quality than the BMCC6K. It does have some differences already. And time marches on. Sigh.

I intend to do some tests just about the image quality between the two since so many people asks me and I am curious as well! I love the image from my 6KFF so anything similar or above is great :)

Glad you liked the video Chris, and thanks for the overall positive feedback on my work!
And I totally with the 6KFF being much better in cities etc. I still intend to use my 6KFF for travels and run and gun work like I have done for the past 10 years with the pocket line!
The Pyxis really is a doco cam for me and one to rig up! Great combo :)
And yes haha you are right about the incoming comments!

That certainly is a benefit for the DSLR-style cameras.

Although, I used to shoot outdoors at public events frequently with the URSA Mini 4.6K with the very large Fujinon 20x7.8 mm lens on a tripod which one would think shouts “professional at work” but many times people would walk or stay standing right in front of the camera blocking my view, so I must have been inconspicuous too! I may have missed it in one of the post here so my apologies if I am asking the same again. I understand the Pyxis is sold in 3 different mount models. Are the mounts exchangeable, say if you purchase one with EF today because you just have a bunch of EF lenses, and later wanted to use a PL instead. Can you buy the PL mount and replace the EF mount?

No.

You should buy the L Mount and buy adapters.

What EF to L mount are worth looking into besides the Sigma?
