Pyxis SDI / Power best practices?

PostThu Dec 05, 2024 2:10 am

While shooting on a tripod, I was planning on having a small BP-U battery in the battery bay on the Pyxis and then supply power from an external V-Mount battery back plate with a D-Tap to Lemo cable.

I was thinking once the V-Mount battery drains, I could unplug the V-Mount, hoping that the BP-U would then automatically provide power, kind of like a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply), perform a quick swap and not lose power or have to shut down the camera, then plug in the fresh V-Mount and continue with the workflow.

Hearing about the potential problems with the SDI protocol and the chance of frying the SDI board inside the camera, I wanted to ask if anyone has any experience or recommendations for this workflow?

I wanted to do some tests to see if this would work, but I also don't want to fry the SDI board.

Thanks for any input!

When the Pyxis is receiving power from the 2-pin connector, that power supply is used by the camera ignoring any battery connection to the rear BPU battery.

When power is lost from the 2-pin connector, the camera reverts to the BP-U battery “without interruption.”

Confirmed!

Without plugging in an SDI monitor, I had the BP-U battery in and was recording while supplying power from a V-Mount battery. When I unplugged the V-Mount battery, it seamlessly switched to the BP-U battery without a hiccup, still recording. I plugged back in the V-Mount battery and it continued as if nothing happened. The only thing that changed was what was displayed on the battery icon in the top right corner of the screen, going from AC to the battery percentage.

I then tried it with the SDI monitor plugged in and the exact same results.

This is great!

Thanks for the additional test. Good news.
