Request: Release a BMD PL to LPL adapter

PostThu Feb 20, 2025 11:09 pm

Now that the Ursa Cine 12k LF is out in the wild, what's the likelihood Blackmagic will release their own PL to LPL adapter, complete with data passthrough? I would love to see an inexpensive, high quality alternative to the $2K Arri one or the $1.5K Leica one.

I’m confused.

There’s the BMD made LPL mount that is $415? It changes in about 60 seconds in the field? And passes lens data.

You know what's even faster and easier than that though?

TBH I wouldn't ever want to change mounts in the field if I could help it. Would much rather use this.

Not that much faster.

It’s four screws.

You get a mount that been shimmed and should stay shimmed.

Much better than an adapter.

Alex, that ARRI adapter is allowing a PL-mount lens to go on a camera with LPL mount. That’s not what you are looking for if you are trying to use an LPL lens on a Cine 12K with PL mount.

John’s suggestion is good and modestly priced if you already have your Cine 12K PL mount camera.

Which is more than zero screws. Also, no tools required if you just use an adapter! If you're living large in studio all the time then fine, who cares? But some of us are out here on mountain tops in -35C weather, where an adapter is infinitely more sensible than completely swapping a mount. Had you considered this?

You're trying to argue that an entire mount with four attachment points is somehow more reliable for flange depth across swaps than a single rigid mount adapter? C'mon man. How does that even make sense? We use these all the time and I can't remember ever having a flange depth issue with one.

Look, I don't think BMD will do it but there's a reason Arri made this adapter and there's a reason that we use them on set. They're a great tool! I would love to see one offered at a lower cost because it'd be great to have options.

No offence Rick, but you may want to reread the OP; that's exactly the adapter they were discussing. The idea would be to have BMD offer an UC12K with the LPL as standard and then release their own locking adapter, so that you wouldn't need to swap mounts.

Thanks. I think I was mixing this up with another forum thread.

Right so we want BMD to make a lower cost adaptor than what already exists even though they already make an actual genuine factory mount that yes..is actually designed to not need shimming though multiple changes once set so it can be field changed.

It’s not going to happen.

Even if you have a different view of adaptors vs mounts, think about what you’re asking. Have they ever just made an adaptor?

Arri make one because LPL is THEIR mount that THEY introduced which they want people to use. And it already exists if you really prefer an adaptor.

I get the idea of wanting to just leave one (LPL) mount on the camera and then using a PL mount adapter as per the Arri method people are getting used to.

But in reality I'm not sure how many people are swapping between LPL and PL glass in the field and so mostly it is something to be done as a normal part of camera prep before shooting.

Well I guess you don't.

If BMD put this adapter out, would anybody be begging them to stop selling it? Such a weird thread.
