TIFF sequence refuses to export at proper timecode

PostWed May 14, 2025 10:01 pm

Hello all, I've a technical question regarding rendering a TIFF sequence. My intent is to export some clips from my timeline, each rendered job having a Start TC in relation to their position on the timeline. My TL starts at TC 0.

If I export, say, an MP4 this works as intended (e.g. the clip has a Start TC of 00:03:15:11). But no matter what I do, all my TIFF sequences always start at 0. Which is useless to me. There is no wiggle room for this, I can't rely on further workarounds like editing the clip attributes a posteriori. I need the files' metadata to be rendered correctly from the get-go.

What am I missing? Tried toggling forcing timeline timecode at 0 on and off, but further than that I don't see many other options that could be influencing this. Very weird that it only happens on image sequences, too.

Thanks in advance for any insight

Edit: further research has revealed TIFF sequences, in fact, cannot carry timecode metadata. So what I’ve been trying to do is impossible, pretty much. EXR does carry this info, so my options are to either live with this fact or switch codecs in my workflow. Oh well.

For me it works fine in beta2 20.
If I have a timeline and do IN/OUT exports somewhere from this timeline starting number does correspond to timeline's IN point.
Check settings under File option in exporter. Maybe you have "Each clip starts at frame" option ticked.
If not, then strange.
You may actually use the option to force starting frame number. Manual for each export, but should work.

If you have a timeline with clips and want export to be related to those clips then you need to use "Render individual clips" option. Then TIFF numbering should corespondent to original file TC (not timeline's).

Yes- TIFF is just a "simple" data container. It doesn't carry TC, but it can carry TC in the file name (as starting frame number). Eg 01:00:00:00 for 24p timeline is 86400.

Yeah frame number (in file name) renders correctly, the issue is with the timecode. Alas, it seems I'm asking for something impossible. I've edited my original post. Thanks for the input!

You can in theory store extra metadata in TIFF, but this is non-standard solution and your other tools won't see it anyway. You can embed eg. EXIF or XMP metadata in TIFF private chunk.

My problem with this is, it will significantly increase our workload. We need to provide several supplementary clips to a streaming platform and I'm not looking forward to having to effectively override the faulty timecode for each before delivery. Lesson learned I guess, we'll handle EXRs next time.

They request TIFF sequences?
Easier with files, or as you said EXR or DPX.

Yeah, better use EXR or DPX. TIFF and PNG and such formats are more suitable for photography side of things, rather than videography. Different needs.
