Text+ Nodes Are Very Slow

PostSun Jul 22, 2018 10:03 pm

I've been trying to add a simple blur to text nodes, but it appears to be quite a challenge in Resolve. I've tried creating a compound clip out of the text node to use the Color blur feature, but that blur does not add enough blur. Anybody who has used Premiere's Gaussian Blur FX knows what I'm trying to achieve. Premiere's blur FX enables you to completely blur out anything and animate cinematic title blurs really smoothly. That's what I'm trying to do in Resolve.

The only way I can see doing it natively in Resolve is with a text+ node, but that creates another issue: Text+ nodes are extremely slow in the interface. They freeze the entire program for up to 5 seconds whenever I click on them or try to move them in the timeline.

It appears the text+ nodes are invoking the Fusion engine whenever they're selected because working with text+ nodes feels just like clicking on the Fusion tab. I understand the integration between Fusion and Resolve is still evolving; so, the freezing is relatively tolerable if I'm working on a substantial comp in the Fusion tab for a while, but freezing every time I want to edit a simple text+ node or move it around the timeline makes the whole experience really frustrating because text is such a frequent part of every project.

So, two questions:

Is there an efficient way to achieve a smooth, substantial text blur like we can achieve with Premiere without a 3rd-party plugin?

Is there a way to eliminate the freezing when moving Fusion clips (and especially text+ nodes) around the timeline?

Thank you for your help.

I would not try to do work this complex on a laptop, particularly one without substantial GPU power.

This is your problem, Video: Intel UHD Graphics 620 4GB VRAM.
You need to get a laptop with a proper GPU in it.

Yeah, I figured my GPU is not helping. I've ordered a much more powerful GPU. I'm sure that will fix the UI problems, but I never had any UI issues with Premiere; so, I guess Fusion just requires a more powerful setup for optimal results. Live and learn. Thanks for your feedback.

I've upgraded my GPU to an AMD Radeon RX580, but I have not seen a significant difference in overall performance.

My laptop is an HP Spectre x360, which is one of the most powerful on the market overall. (CPU has burst mode up to around 3.5 Ghz.) Even before the upgrade, my system wasn't particularly stressed by any of my Resolve/Fusion work, but several Text+ nodes were still unable to display smoothly. (You can see the screenshot of my system stats before the GPU upgrade to confirm that the system was not being pushed very hard.) The biggest weakness was the GPU. Now with that upgraded with an eGPU connected via 40gbit/s Thunderbolt 3 connection, it's disappointing to not see a large Resolve performance boost.

Resolve detects the GPU and is using it, but GPU utilization generally never exceeds 10%. There seems to be a modest reduction in overall CPU burden and overall rendering speed seems to be a bit faster, but a few Text+ nodes are still problematic for my setup for some reason. No matter what I do, they never play smoothly in the timeline.

I have Smart Caching on. I've configured my Optimized Media settings to use DNxHR SQ, which is a relatively lower bitrate format for lower system strain. All the checkboxes to "automatically cache . . . " are checked. Performance Mode is on. I can see all clips are cached (indicated in blue) throughout the timeline. And "Render Cache Fusion Output" is on. And no matter what I do, some Text+ nodes never play faster than about 13 frames/second.

And these are not very complicated Fusion comps. For example, I've attached a screenshot of one of the Text+ node graphs that I'm talking about. On my system (and far less powerful systems) Fusion should be able to handle much more complicated comps before it starts breaking a sweat. Regardless, my system both before and after the GPU upgrade is not being pushed very hard by anything I'm doing in Resolve/Fusion. My project is only 1280x720. So, there doesn't seem to be any logical reason for these Text+ nodes to display at such a low frame rate.

Another other ideas?
