v17.1b24 > 3D Video Monitor Lookup Table missing

PostSat Mar 13, 2021 4:30 pm

Unless the process has changed I am trying to calibrate the monitor connected to my Intensity Pro. I used to put the calibrated 3D LUT in the slot for 3D Video Monitor Lookup Table but now in v17, that's not there.

If I add the LUT to the Video Monitor Lookup Table slot, it affects not only the Intensity Pro monitor but also the player window inside of Resolve. Sure, both that window and the Intensity Pro screen now match but it throws all colour correction out the window. Nothing renders how it is shown in Resolve or the monitor.

So what's going on here? Bug? I set this up in the v16 but after going to v17 it's missing.

Ok, I think I figured it out.

Set the Video monitor lookup to the calibrated LUT. What I missed was the "Color Viewer Lookup" was set to Use Video Monitoring selection when it should be set to "No LUT Selected".

OK, here is something that I have discovered.

Video Monitor LUT affects the external monitor, Color Viewer LUT affects the viewer on the color page. Color Viewer LUT will NOT affect the viewer used on the Cut or Edit pages. In fact, the look on those two viewers looks almost ungraded.

I don't know about you but when I start an edit I like to work with semi-corrected video content. Working in the cut page with LOG footage kinda sucks. Same going with audio. The recorded audio tracks are pretty low in volume.

After I get one clip down I flip to the color page and do a quick grade then over to the Fairlight page to get the audio set at the track level. Then I go back to the Cut Page to work on the rough cut. Then it's over the Edit page for refining and then back to the Color page for grading.

Not sure if that is how everyone else goes about it but the way BMD lays things out and promotes the workflow it's, start at the Media page and go from left to right. I've never worked on a project in a manner as simple as that. I find myself bouncing from page to page back and forth.

Any thoughts?

I solve this by working in ACES.

I worked with ACES a while back and ran into some problems. I called support and was told because I was using ACES that the problems were workflow and BMD support doesn't provide support for workflow.

Ever since then, I've stuck with the default and if I run into an issue they can't fall back on the "workflow escape". The trade-off there, obviously, is cutting in LOG sucks. You would think that the viewer used on the colour page would be the same viewer as on the cut and edit pages. Why would/should it be different?

The forums didn't help with the ACES issue?

It was a while back, I can't remember what the problem was. Long story, I had to abandon ACES, go back to unmanaged workflow and regrade everything.

Also ran into a no-support issue when I jumped to v16 when it was in beta. I found out there's no support the hard way. That's why I skip beta releases now. If I run into an issue I need to have the option of talking to support about it. If you are working an ACES or Managed workflow and have an issue, about pretty much anything, there's no support because you are using that workflow. The only "workflow" BMD really supports is the unmanaged workflow.

If someone from BMD wants to contradict me on this please do so. Perhaps the tech I spoke with just was tired and didn't want to try and recreate the issue I was having.
