Xrite Color checker Passport with a6400 and DR issues

Is anybody using the xrite colorchecker passport for video with a Sony a6400? When i use the color match feature in DR the colors don't seem to be correct. I'm shooting without a color profile (might be my issue) which Sony customer support said defaults to ITU709 which i guess is the same as Rec.709 . In DR I choose Rec.709 as the source gamma (ITU709 isn't an option in the DR dropdown), Target gamma, and target color space, i input the color temperature which i shot the clip with by using the white balance card and custom color preset, and when i click match button the colors come back goofy.

I'm curious what I'm doing wrong. Should I be shooting with a picture profile and then choosing that profile as the source gamma?

I never had much success with that chart and my Sony Alpha cameras using the Match function.
Rather grade by hand based on the charts and the scopes.

The ITU709 profile on Sony cameras appears to use Gamma 2.4 where 18% Mid Gray is @ 49 IRE

The Rec.709 source gamma in Color Checker panel is Rec.709 Scene


If you're using Color Checker matching, you should set the source gamma to Gamma 2.4


If your Color Checker Passport was manufactured before November 2014, you should use Color Checker Classic - Legacy

Otherwise, use Color Checker Classic.

should i be using a color profile in my camera to make it easier considering i'm grading in post anyway?

I'd say with any camera recording in 8 bit with massive compression, get as close to the look you are aiming for in the camera. You can tweak Sony profiles ad nauseam, find something that appeals to you for the project at hand. There is not much leeway for grading anyway.

This is why I switched from the Panasonic GH4 to the original Blackmagic Pocket.

Both ITU709 (PP4) and "No Picture Profile" appear to default to Gamma 2.4

The difference is that when you have No Picture Profile enabled, there are also "creative looks" applied to the footage which may alter it slightly from the Rec.709 Gamma 2.4 base setting.

That's likely the issue, Resolve is asking for the color temp of the space not the scene, by changing this value you're altering the WB target for the correction. This setting should be 6500 for 709.
