Audio latency problem during playback - Mac M1 Studio

PostFri May 13, 2022 7:02 am

I’m on a Mac Mini M1, using Resolve Studio 17, hooked to a 4K monitor via HDMI. Audio playback while editing is ALWAYS early by 3 frames (125ms) during playback.

Audio scrubs in perfect sync, but when I play the timeline in Edit/Fairlight or any mode, audio is early. If I play the same clip in Quicktime it’s in perfect sync. If I use a different edit program like Premiere it’s in sync.

I can play audio through the monitor (via hdmi), via internal speaker or USB audio device and it’s the same problem. Audio is in sync, scrubs in sync but plays 3 frames early. I’ve tried every setting/preference/option I can find related to audio/video playback and it makes no difference.

I've toyed with the audio i/o playback processing buffer size with no effect. Under PREFERENCES-USER-FAIRLIGHT there is a Video I/O Offset option.

This seems to be exactly what I need, but again it has no effect regardless of the setting. I've tried multiple resolutions, frame rates and codecs all with the same consistent audio offset/error of 125ms.

How can I manually input an audio delay/offset to correct this--while keeping audio scrubbing as is?

Unfortunately none of the settings in the Playout dialog seem to affect edit/timeline playback. I changed Offset audio by to "12" and it made no difference. I should note I'm just using a single hdmi monitor for editing and playback (no other external monitor)

***SOLVED*** After extensive research I happened on the answer: Changing the monitor frequency to 60hz resolves the audio/video sync issue. Even through the timelines I'm working with are 24fps, a monitor frequency set to less than 60hz causes this sync problem. It doesn't affect audio scrubbing--only playback from the timeline. This issue appears to be unique to Resolve. Monitor frequency settings don't cause sync issues with Quicktime or Adobe Premiere playback. It would still be nice to have a direct audio latency adjustment to compensate for issues like this, but moving to 60hz does solve the problem.

It would be nice if Resolve took advantage of those panels and in case of 24fps project switch refresh to 120Hz or even eg. 72Hz. And then follow this with other project fps.

Hmm, I have a similar Mac M1 Studio. My problem is my monitors are older Samsung 4K and only have refresh rates up to 30hz. Did you run into any solutions for these?

I'm having the same issue: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=174118

Only seems to affect playback within resolve. Audio lags waveform, even from media bin. I'm using a Dell 5K monitor, and it's running at 60Hz. Well, 59.9Hz. Same file works fine on a macbook M1 pro laptop. No idea how to solve this.

I am editing a feature film at home (offline/proxy) using my Macbook Air M1, monitoring the image on a TV LG using Airplay and the sound on Edifier monitor plugged on headphone jack. Same was happening here, sound out of sync, an expected behavior since I am sending image by Airplay through Wi-fi. I solve it using a tip that I found searching on Gemini. I installed Audio Hijack and configured it to delay my system audio before sending to output monitors. It worked as a charm. ;)
