4K Capture in v15?

PostThu Jul 26, 2018 8:32 pm

Just a quick question to confirm what I think I already found out.

Currently running version Resolve v12.5.4.019 at a post house and looking in to some conform options for 4K footage.

The workflow I was asked to try and figure out was taking 4096x2160 .mxf masters from a C300 (shot at 25fps) and running them through the in house Teranex to conform them to 23.976 for edit.

***(Quick note: the hardware setup here is a 2014 mac mini running El Capitan 10.11.8 going thunderbolt out via an UltraStudio MiniMonitor > HDMI out from MiniMonitor in to a Teranex AV > HDMI out of TNEX in to an UltraStudio MiniRecorder > Thunderbolt out of Recorder in to a Late 2015 iMac running El Capitan 10.11.6)***

The main question is this: they have a ton of 4096 x 2160 C300 footage shot at 25fps that they want converted to 23.976 for edit. From what I've found (and experienced while demonstrating), the Teranex can only output 3840 x 2160 UHD and neither BMD Media Express nor our current version of Resolve can capture footage at anything above 1080p60.

I need to discuss what they want to do on Monday and want to make certain whether this conform idea of theirs is even doable. Is 4K capture something that's feasible with the hardware / software they currently have?

Does v14 or 15 of Resolve feature 4K capture? Is there a version of Media Express that can handle this? (Currently running v3.5.5)

This kind of thing is not my area of expertise so thanks for the help.

25p to 23.976p can be done in about every NLE/converter out there as this is just a "slow down", so frame assumption. It doesn't require any "conversion". It's actually audio which needs to be slow down and re-pitched if you need/prefer it.
Load footage to Resolve, set in clip properties framerate to 23.976 and export from 23.976p timeline/project.
I'm not sure what Resolve does with audio automatically, but I would suggest to take it into good audio tool and slow down accordingly (with or without pitch correction).
Whole Teranex "live playback+capture" is totally unnecessary and about most convoluted way to do your task.

Thanks Andrew,

Yeah, I know that the conversion can easily be done through software. That's the first thing I suggested when I was asked about the Teranex conversion but the clients were insistent that this was the way they wanted to go.

Once I ran up against the potential hardware / software limitation I wanted to make sure and confirm it before I relay that to them. It's my specific hope that it will change their minds.

Anybody have any ideas on this?

Collected some additional information about my capture machine this morning: the graphics card installed is a Radeon R9 M395X

Are you talking about cheap UltraStudio MiniMonitor/Recorder?
They don't support UHD/4K DCI at all, so this is never going to work :)

BMD says two cards capture DCi4k, the Decklink 8kpro and 4k extreme

my machines can render 4k at around 200fps, so likely will not drop frames captureing 4k @ 24fps

need fast disks and lotsa CPU core's for this tho

i run dual 12c xeon's / SAS arrays

likely the GPU will have little to do in this process

unless you have enough work in hand to amort a decent spec HP or SuperMicro, i'd farm out the job to someone who has made the investment already and walk away

Andrew: Yeah, the UltraStudio boxes are the hardware they have. That's exactly what I needed to know.

Thanks so much fellas. Really appreciate the specs on your rig Dermot and the suggestions. It'll be very helpful when I try to explain the limitations of the client's system.

Seriously appreciate it. Thanks again. :D

If the footage is already captured, sending it through a Teranex for conversion is pointless. Client is totally wrong in this case, and if they won't listen, I wouldn't take the job (though this is easier said than done). Software conversion should be smooth, and not take that long, unless they have a massive amount of footage.
