Stop putting clips into power bins automatically

PostTue Feb 07, 2023 1:12 pm

When the power bins panel is active, if you drag a clip from the windows explorer to the timeline, DaVinci will add the clip to the power bins and the project bins automatically. The same thing will happen if you render in place some clips.

I don't know what the other users think but I don't like this behavior. If I want something to be in the power bins, I will drag it myself there. Everything should go to the project bins by default

I think the current behavior makes sense.

To avoid this happening, do all your importing from the Media Storage panel on the Media page.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I was inclined to upvote, but after a quick test I'm gonna have to disagree ... I assumed you were saying Power Bins were being populated for no reason, just because they were enabled in the Media Pool, even when they were not the actively targeted bin. If that were the case I'd certainly agree., but in the quick test I just did on my MBP, its not. Dragging from the Finder to the timeline (vs dragging to a bin) means that it has to be added to the project somewhere. Naturally, I would expect it to be added to the actively targeted bin ... and if the actively targeted bin is currently a Power Bin then I would absolutely expect it to be added there. As far as I can tell, the existing functionality is completely appropriate ie the clip should be added to the targeted bin.

-1

All that said, dragging direct to timeline vs dragging first to bin is not a familiar workflow for me, so maybe I'd be more annoyed/invested if I did it a lot.

Stop putting clips into power bins automatically

Good point Andy. I think I remove my +1.
Not making it a -1 though as I'm not familiar enough with the use case to have a feel for it. I'm sure you all who are will air the issues out well enough.

If the targeted bin is the power bin, it creates 2 copies, one copy to the power bin and another copy to the project bin.

On the other hand, rendering in place places the clip only in the power bin.
If you highlight the project bin, then right click the rendered in place clip and select Find in Media Pool, the project bin is still highlighted but it displays the contents of the power bin on the right side. I consider this as a bug.

Yep, correct. It's not creating two references in the project though, it's adding one reference in the Power Bin, as requested, because the actively targeted bin is the Power Bin, and it's also necessarily creating a reference at the root level of the project because adding a Power Bin clip to your timeline is defacto adding it to your project ... same thing that happens when you drag a clip from a Power Bin into a timeline, it adds a clip reference at the root level of the project.

I have no explanation for why Render in Place does not add a project reference when a Power Bin is targeted though... that's definitely inconsistent behaviour.

My argument is that a timeline is a project asset associated with the project bin. So any user actions inside the timeline should not affect the power bins in any way IMHO, even if the power bins are targeted.

Here's another example of inconsistent behavior:
Copy a timeline clip, create a new empty project, target the power bin, go to the timeline and paste the copied clip, the clip will be added to the project bin only.

+1 to original feature request
my only suggestion would be that users have a choice:
- targeted (Davinci's current setting)
- default to masterbin
- default to last targeted non-power bin

I totally agree.
If I'm working on a project and creating Zoom Adjustment clips, then I'm going to be in the Power Bins.
I close out the project.
Next day, I have all these Audio clips (Media) Missing.
Doesn't make sense.
At least, I found that I can drag the Clips from the Power Bin to The 'Master' section just above it, and that returns them to the Timeline.

Sorry, I have not figured out how to create a new post ( says 'no recipient defined') so I'm posting here..

I save my project before I shut down for the night.
The next day when I launch Davinci, It automatically loads the project and there are usually several Audio Clips missing, replaced by a solid red clip with the file name at the bottom.
In the previous version, I was able to copy the clip from the Power Bin (if it was there) to the Master Clip list and it would automatically restore the clip. That doesn't work any more.
I also was able to copy the Clip from Capture folder to the Master Clip list and the clip would be restored automatically.
That doesn't work any more, either.
Now, the only thing that works is if I drag the clip from the Master Clip list to the timeline to replace the Red Clip.
The problem with that is I now have to trim the clip so it will set into the timeline correctly. Since I don't have the old waveform, I can't line it up accurately and it then becomes a guessing game.

The real Question here is Why are these clips disappearing after the Project was saved and everything worked correctly?

In my opinion, adding items to the power bin should always be a deliberate and manual action taken by the user. It's not a regular bin like the ones in the media pool.

Despite efforts to be careful, there will inevitably be times when I discover items in my power bins that I never intended to have there lol.

When a power bin is in "focus", the simplest solution would be to just have Resolve place the elements at the root of "Master.
