Genlock on Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K G2

PostWed Jan 17, 2024 5:32 am

Hi everyone! Forgive my ignorance, but I feel like I've gone to every source I can think of to try and figure this out, but to no avail. I am considering getting a Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K G2, but it is critical that I have the ability to genlock it to a master source I have set up in a studio. I can see that it supports Genlock input on the box and the manual talks about external reference, but nowhere does it say how to connect a Genlock source to the camera. Can anyone help point me in the right direction here? Thanks!

I think it will work here, just like on Ursa Broadcast G2.
You must provide a return signal (sdi) synchronized with your master device.

The MS4K can sync to the program SDI out of an Atem. If you want to plug the MS4K into a genlocked (non Atem) switcher you're going to need a frame sync.

Hi there,

I'm trying to reference the Micro Studio Camera 4K G2 camera to an external source (not a switcher). The only option in the on screen selection menu under Reference Source is Internal and Program despite it saying External in the manual on page 55:

Your Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K G2 can lock to an internal or external reference source, or to the reference signal in the program input from an ATEM switcher.

I'm running on 9.2.2 Camera Setup with all updates.

How do I reference this camera to an external reference that is not a switcher?

Thanks,
Cyprian

Are you trying to lock to a Tri-Level Sync or Black and Burst reference (both analogue) or an SDI reference?

Others have posted that the 4K G2 will lock to it's SDI input at the SDI level, but nobody has confirmed if it will lock to a standard analogue reference (locking to SDI isn't a widespread thing in the broadcast world - mainly because it's not a particularly tight timing standard - most gear locks to B&B or TLS)

I seem to remember back in the day there being combo SDSDI/Composite IO on some devices but I've never run across any 12G SDI IO that was capable of analog anything. It's anecdotal tho, Gary Adams has confirmed the input is only capable of HDSDI.

Program=External, the camera can sync to an SDI source, doesn't need to be "PGM". I've sync'd the cam to other cams as well as a Teranex AV and pulled RP188 from the stream. If it's not locking then there is a frame rate mismatch or other issue in your chain.

Yes Howard is correct. The Micro Studio will only lock to the SDI Input signal and must be the same frame rate as the camera. It does not accept analog reference signals.
