Resolve 18.5 - Photo RAW (CR3) converted to DNG - Offline

Hi,

I shot some RAW photos (Canon CR3 format), and use Adobe Digital Negative Converter to conver the CR3 photo to dng format.

Then add the converted dng photo to DR 18.5 beta 5, but it shows 'Offline media'.

Anything to do can fix it ?

Can you share a sample for testing?

I tested more.

All Adobe serials ( the latest Adobe DNG Converter, Bridge 2023 and Lightroom that use Camera Raw 15.4.1 ) output DNGs all failed to show in Resolve 18.5 beta 5, all shows as Offline Media.

DxO PureRAW 3, output DNDs still failed to be correctly shown in Resolve 18.5 beta 5, show as Offline Media.

Capture One 23, output DNGs can correctly show in Resolve 18.5 beta 5.

Please check if in Beta 6 version of 18.5 Resolve, can fix this?

At least the Adobe softwares output DNG recognition problems can be solved.

In Resolve Studio 18.5 official version still has this Media Offline problem.

sadly i can add Iridiens C transformer MacOs, work with no compression, but completely waste of color profile, unusable.

I just tested it on Resolve 18.5 and do not have the 'Media offline' problem. It loses the color profile, but it reads the DNG. In the raw settings I can get it pretty close to the supposed look. Of course this is not how it should work, but better than not having an image at all.

I now got around to test your photo of the duck, whereas before I used my own CR3s. Adobe DNG converter doesn't convert your file, claims there is a problem with parsing. No such problem with my own CR3s.
Even DPP doesn't read the file properly, puts a questionmark on it. Is the file working on your DPP? If not, something has corrupted it.

A bug report has been filed for this, but a rapid fix is not likely.

I have no chance to try 18.6 version yet.

I'm seeing the CaptureOne work, but the other two are offline.

I have no insight into the timing of software updates.

Could it be that when you converted your image to DNG, that you converted to a linear (demosaiced) image?

Though i have no idea what the exact color space and Gama i'm supposed to set up for the DNG files i can tell you that it works with no issues to import the DNG files in Resolve.

Sadly the lens correction and color fringing data is not transferred in the process .. but given that photography is a side job i'll take it ...

I would like to try acc. to your settings and input to Resolve Studio 18.6.4

If you consider the color space of Sony, I would suggest to set as SLog3 which to make Sony's RAW to the largest DNG color space.

The DNG converter from Adobe, it's free to use, and it does a great job at batch conversion.

I've tested your Sony's .ARW convert to .dng via Adobe DNG convertor, it works when import the output .dng to the Resolve.

But if I use the DxO PhotoLab 7 to convert to .dng, then it still failed. No matter with Lens correction apply only or with all correction apply, all not work in Resolve.

Come back to Canon .CR3 raw photo topic, maybe due to it is the latest format RAW for Resolve Studio, currently the only workable way is using your suggested website conversion.

I hope Resolve developing team could pay attention of Canon .CR3 format RAW photo, if convert via Adobe DNG convertor or DxO family softwares or other professonal softwares, just to let .CR3 be easy recognized by Resolve Studio version.

My own recent discoveries concerning .cr2 files from EOS 5D Mark III show that Resolve can't work with mRAW scaled -down version of RAW (it probably only loads the embedded preview but RAW controls have no effect), but can with regular Canon RAW. Also, .dng converted from mRAW show offline in Resolve but does load and reacts to RAW controls in the loader in Fusion Standalone. Go figure.
So, while I don't know the R5, perhaps you're feeding Resolve with some new variant of downsized version of RAW, courtesy of Canon.

P.S. latest development: .dngs converted from full sized .cr2 RAW do work in Resolve

And now that I have scrutinized in EXIFToolGui the .cr3 file in question here, it is in C-RAW compressed format...I would bet that it creates the same problem with Resolve as .cr2's mRAW . Try shooting standard Canon RAW with R5C.

Beside ohimbz suggested online conversion method (above online address), it seems only the software Capture One converted .dng can be corrected recognized by Resolve.

This issue might be with Adobe software. But then Blackmagic needs to work on making a converter or make any raw file to work in the Davinci Resolve.

But I can open the original in Apple's Preview and export from there as a 16 bit PNG or TIFF, and both look right to me in DR. Preview can do batch exports, but I don't know how many at one time.

It has to be a Resolve issue. Final Cut Pro can import and see the CR3 example files posted by Auluswang as well as the DNG files converted using Adobe's DNG converter.

You have various options including converting to a format readable by Resolve, such as TIFF or PNG, as Uli suggests. You would probably be better doing the conversion in Lightroom or similar photo editing software as you can batch edit the stills there first before the raw conversion, which would give you more options than using Preview or editing the files in Resolve.

Since MacOS is supporting the format, both in Preview and for thumbnails, it should be easy to add it. At least on a Mac.

Yes, but as noted by others and by me in 2023, the issue seems to be constrained to specific cameras for mysterious reasons. CR3s from my EOS R work fine in Resolve when converted into DNG with Adobe converter.

Actually I just checked this and it is possible to assign a different color space to a file in Preview and export it with that tag. That is thanks to Apple's ColorSync. In fact Preview is now a pretty advanced application.

However, I still don't think this is a great way to work here as Preview lacks the tools to do a refined raw conversion that one has in Lightroom or other dedicated stills editor. Lightroom's tools are way more refined than anything in Preview and probably anything in Canon's own software (not used that in a long time I should add).

I'm not clear on why you are suggesting exporting as Rec2020 unless the Resolve project is going to be HDR - I don't think I've seen any mention of HDR in this thread. In any case, Resolve also can't handle the new HDR formats such as JPEG-XL which really take advantage of HDR stills editing.

EDIT - I also just checked Apple's Photos App and it can convert these Canon raw files. It also has a whole load of tools in the raw converter. I've ignored it to date as my workflow is embedded in Lightroom/Photoshop but it is extremely impressive. This would very likely be a much better option than Preview for a Mac user with no dedicated stills software.

I was thinking of a quick and dirty solution. But yes, Foto can do more and also handles those files. And then, it can apply the corrections you create for one hero shot to a whole bunch.

Resolve seems to totally ignore the Rec2020 tag when you import a still exported from Lightoom in that color space so as far as I can see you gain nothing doing this. Resolve treats it as SDR anyway. This is not the case for FCP which does recognise a still exported from Lightroom with a Rec2020 tag as HDR but we are not talking FCP here.

I disagree with the notion that you are better importing the raw image into Resolve (or FCP for that matter) as Resolve does not have the same level of tools for editing stills as Lightroom. There are a number of new AI tools in Lightroom which make for superior stills editing over anything that is possible in an NLE. Just take noise reduction for example. Lightroom has extremely powerful noise AI reduction designed to work on stills. There is no equivalent in Resolve where the noise reduction is designed for video. I could go on ......

What can observe is that dng start like standard way to encapsule different raw format, but not ever work fine, also in Adobe software.
Later Blackmagic Design start to adopt with their first cinema camera, later add compression (custom) that stop to be readable from Adobe software.
Later many other camera developers start to add cdng to work around Red patent, without compression, but when you hit some kind of compression you find different implementation.

Not all software read correct color space tag or give you problems.

Converting raw to dng should be a solution to implement on resolve, but reveal more quirk than solution.

In past there is Cineform raw that now is disappear after going in open source that was a solution to this kind of problems, but at today there isn’t a solution to produce a cfRaw it should cost 20$ per camera, but due Red deal (first Red code was based on wavelet like Cineform, but Newman did it many years before Red) may be there is an hidden deal about no more CineformRaw.

ProRes raw not give us a solution like many of us (me too) hope like new common raw then we can only hope that Blackmagic Design decide to build a braw software encoder to encode this kind of files in braw, I’m will be happy to pay it like resolve license

Noise reduction can be more efficient by temporal methods for moving images.
But we are talking stills here.

If you use a single image over a period of time, then the noise on the still image would hardly be noticeable, except in extreme situations. Rather it is usually necessary to add noise to match the rest of the footage.
However in many cases sequences of stills are being used, such as in time lapse or stop motion. Temporal noise reduction applies here just as well as in video.

That is also why it is preferable to do have the ability to import the raw images rather then grade them in Lightroom, no matter how good Lightroom's tools are and how inadequate DR's raw tools are. We want to grade them over time, not on single images. There isn't really any difference between a still sequence and a video, other then the fixed frame rate the video camera uses. But while the raw videos from video cameras are imported without problem, the raw image sequences from photo cameras are not.

So great proposal, that if DR team can add a function of convert the CR3 (for example) RAW photo format into DR BRAW format, can handling in the Resolve.
