Stuttering "Media Offline" bug

PostFri Apr 26, 2024 4:21 pm

I've had this issue in a few projects now, where a clip will stutter between linked and 'Media Offline' really fast . I'll re-link the clip, and it'll play normally until I make any changes to it in the colour tab, and it'll go back to this, or completely unlink all together. At worst, this has also caused DR 19 to crash and close entirely.

This is likely an issue related to playback of mp4 files. I am trying to remember the exact issue but as I recall it was related to an expectation that my Nvidia graphics card was expected to decode the problematic files. Again, trying to recall the exact problem, but I think there is a "decode" option checkbox for GPU in Davinci Resolve that can solve this problem.

I have the same issue on Macbook Pro MAX 16 M1 (OS: Sonoma 14.5 (23F79)). The clips are from Sony A7SIII (h265 codec) using Davinci Resolve 19 Beta 3.

At the beginning of every clip on the timeline at the second frame "Media Offline" appears for 1 frame and then it is OK.

Same issue here that Dimo is having.

Second frame only of each clip shows as offline. Rendered clips contain the Media Offline screen as well.

Turning off the 'Decode using h.264/h.265 using hardware acceleration' checkbox resolves the issue.

Edit: Rendering is so slooooow when the checkbox is disabled.

Interesting. This sounds a lot like the encoding issue that was attributed to M3 chip. But it’s happening here on an M1 Max.

I think I have found a solution. I think the problem is caused by the codec/format of the video. So I imported the clips - where the media offline bug happened - to Avidemux, and I chose Nvidia H.264 as the video output, and mp4 muxer as the output format, and saved the video. Then I imported these new clips to Davinci, and the media offline bug has gone. So I think the problem is not caused by the fact, that the media is actually missing, rather because it is hard for Davinci to play video clips with different codecs.
