Wrong settings for Braw on BMPCC 6K Pro?

PostWed Jun 19, 2024 4:26 pm

I shot using Blackmagic RAW for the first time last week. All of my braw footage is unusable--blotchy and low-res-looking. I switched to ProRes because I wanted to use slower SD cards instead of an SSD when running & gunning. I clearly don't understand the settings on my new camera because the braw shouldn't look terrible, right?

I've shot before and had BMPCC6K Pro seemingly "magically" change to maximum aperture and that creates truly terrible footage. I know I'm handling the camera in some casual way that allows that setting to change sometimes, but I'm pretty sure that isn't what happened this time.

Thanks,
John Fremer

ps: the post editor has a button for URL but "you're not allowed to post URLs"? How do I share screenshots?

Do you have the LUT turned on and a color managed project?

I was careful to turn off the "burn LUT to file" setting at the beginning of the gig. And clearly there's no LUT on the ProRes.

FYI: I've since reset my camera to defaults. I don't have time to try and recreate the issue and maybe I'll never know what happened.

Have you had ISO/Iris/shutter angle set to auto? Which codec have you used? Can you share screenshots of clip’s meta data?

John, please share a Braw frame (not a screenshot) so we can take a look. You can export one from the raw tab in DaVinci Resolve.

At the same resolution, BRAW files are often smaller than ProRes.

If they were talking about a BMPCC4K this might be helpful, but on a BMPCC6K you have to crop in substantially when you're recording UHD BRAW.

Oh, yeah. Forgot about that.

(One of the reasons I actually prefer the 4K over the 6K.)
