Place to buy bmpcc4k presets?

PostSat Jun 29, 2024 7:00 pm

Hi everyone! I just bought my camera and am new to videography. I'm doing research and learning but in the meantime, I was wondering if anyone knows of a place to buy presets for my camera to help get me started?

I've googled it and all I seem to be able to find are LUTs. I would like presets where I can look at their settings and use them to learn what I like and dislike.

Maybe what you're looking for is powergrades. They can be used to apply a look, but you can see all the nodes and essentially dissect the components of the look that way. Do some searches for Davinci Resolve Powergrades and you'll find some, for example PixelTools sells some (and you can download a small set of them for free as well).

Note that these powergrades are applied in post, in DaVinci Resolve. For specific looks to be applied in-camera for monitoring, you'll need to use LUTs. You can create LUTs from powergrades if you want to duplicate their look for monitoring in-camera.

Also, it's worth noting that the new version of Resolve, version 19, which is still in beta, includes a film look creator tool with individual sliders for each component of the look, which you can use to create a look you like and you can then export a LUT from it to use in your camera.

Depending on whether and how you set up color management in Resolve, these exported LUTs may not look right in your camera, however. If you just want to use a good monitoring LUT in your camera, check out Robert Niessner's Pocket 4K LUTs (do a search in this forum and you'll find them).
Resolve 19 Studio, M2 MacBook Air with 24 gigs of RAM; also Mac Pro 3.0 GHz 8-core, 32 gigs RAM, dual AMD D700 GPU.

I may be wrong, but I think this may be putting the cart before the horse so to speak. My understanding of camera presets (or any device that supports presets such as an audio recorder) is that for a given particular shoot or scenario, you determine the device settings which you like by trial and error or necessary for the particular task, and then you save the settings by creating one or more presets.

To illustrate on the camera, you may create settings to handle high speed action compared to ordinary scenes.

Or if applicable to an audio recorder, you define all the mics and audio recorder settings for a particular combination of mics and other specs you want to return to in the future—you can predict some of the changes you’ll likely encounter, and in the future you simply select the preset applicable to these mics and recording settings. One preset might relate to using four different mics for recording different instruments and another preset concentrates on a pair of mics for vocal recordings and a pair of mics to generally capture instruments from stage left and right for a stereo mix.

If you're invested enough to buy presets then surely you can spare the hour it takes to just... read the manual? It's not rocket science.

Look up Juan Malera's Film Unlimited Powergrades and Phantom Luts.

Thank you all for the tips.

And yes I am reading the manual. Just thought having some well thought out presets by experienced users would help but maybe I’m getting ahead of myself.

In 2024 (G5) it’s not very hard to get a good looking image right out of the box with a BM camera. 10 years ago it took a little finesse.

Good Luck

Not sure that's really a thing. Different shooting conditions will require different camera settings.

Your best option is to learn the basics of Cinematography, which will apply to any camera.

And then to learn the camera settings and how they impact the results.

Do this before using the camera on any paid job. ;)

Haha, definitely. Thanks for clearing that up.

I’m starting to see what Howard Roll said about it not being that hard to get a good video with the 5th generation model.

I'm almost certain that they meant to say Gen5 Color Science.
