6kff - suggestion - Prime lens zoom feature

PostSun Jun 02, 2024 2:23 pm

One of my first 4k cameras was the JVC Gy-LS300 with a Prime zoom feature (
). This was very useful depending on target resolution. Might be possible for the Open gate down to s35 or 1080p on 6kff?

It's an interesting feature but the problem with trying to implement this on a camera like the BMCC6K is that it'd be impossible to implement at the same time as recording a raw codec. The camera would need to scale the zoomed frames and you can't really scale a raw image. If BMD really wanted to they could probably do this if there was a ProRes recording option but I just don't see that happening, sadly.

I understand, but at the same time, is s35 recording still recording in open gate then?

I am back on this question - to Blackmagic - Since the different resolution options in the FF is through windowing a part of the sensor - it should be possible to achieve the same as shown on the JVC - giving the ultimate flexibility for adapting lenses.

S35 and all of the other crops are using different readouts from the sensor. That's why you're able to record at higher frame rates when cropping more: the less you read from the sensor the quicker you can read it. The quicker you can read that info, the more times you can read it in a second.

Nope. To achieve this on the 6K FF, you'd need to be able to change the crop every frame. If it could do that, then the other issues is that BRAW files would need to have a dynamic resolution. I'm pretty sure the JVC is just shooting full sensor and then cropping and scaling to a specific resolution in post.
