Why can't you switch off proxies with the BMCC6K?

PostTue Jul 23, 2024 11:23 pm

As I understand it, there's no option to switch off proxy recording with the BMCC6K.

Has Blackmagic ever addressed why they chose to implement proxies this way? Even though the files are small they are using card space and presumably eating up some processing power too.

Personally, I would make proxies in post if I wanted them. I guess it's linked to the camera to cloud implementation, but I still don't get why there's no option to disable proxies.

I don't think they have addressed why. I assume it's just so that someone won't switch them off and then forget to turn them back on when they want them. That's the only thing I can assume.

I agree though. I'd like to be able to shut them off and save the little bit of power and space they use up. I don't use them and frequently just delete the files in the proxy folder.

I can imagine it would be a little awkward if they're using FPGA space to do h.264 encoding because that's valuable and would be going to waste but it doesn't really change the fact that I don't want proxy recording.

For the iOS app they have made it possible in an update to disable proxy recording.
So my guess is that they will bring this to the camera in a future firmware update, too.
But it takes probably much more effort to implement something into the camera OS than adding it to the iOS app.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Thanks, I am glad it's not just me :-)

Thanks for your help. I wish they made the app for iPhones as well as iPads!

I thought you can run it on iPhones. I think my friend used it on his iPhone. I don't know what model he has though.

I think you misunderstood what I meant. I was talking about the Blackmagic Camera app, not about the app they made to control the camera via Bluetooth.

I too would like to turn off the proxies but for a somewhat different reason: the proxies created by Resolve are visually very high quality but I discovered that's not so with the camera-generated proxies. I often used proxies and don't want low-quality proxies surreptitiously entering my workflow.
