Some BM4K footage from me.

I understand how annoying the black sun (or purple sun) is on these cameras, but Black Magic cameras are not the only system that suffer from this. Even the Alexa does this every once in a while.

I respectfully but strongly disagree with the idea that BMD should leave it to post software to address "black sun" artifacts in any of their cameras.

They fixed this issue in the BMPCC pocket cam, and hopefully they'll also fix it in the new BMPC-4K cam by the time it ships or ASAP. If the hardware is capable of it, they should fix it in the BMCC, too.

I agree. Although an easy fix in post, if it can be fixed in camera, it should be.

Yes sorry, i mentioned elsewhere (on vimeo comments i think) that the black dot is currently there like the BMCC, but it was fixed in the Pocket so i'm hoping it will be fixed for the other 2 cameras. I forgot to mention that here too.

Why are 90% of the shots low contrast? Especially in the shadows? All your other test samples have balanced contrast..so was this just an aesthetic decision?

The music video shots are the best (imo) and they have the most contrast (and lighting I'd imagine).

Just curious on the decisions made for this footage.

Interesting, i thought this was higher contrast/saturation than what i usually do so maybe we're describing different things the same way? There's some 'lifted blacks' on a few shots.. and there's quite a few backlit shots were the sun was flaring the lens which lowers contrast and lifts shadows too. Is that what you mean? I consider this a pretty aggressive grade though. Thanks!

Jesus Christ! What a difference watching this on a Mac made!!! Much, much better. Gorgeous.

I know macs and PC have different native gamma points, but when rendering out for web I thought that vimeo rendered all to a single, common gamma value?!

Anyone else watch this on both platforms tell me they're seeing the same thing?

Watched this on a MacBook Pro Retina Display and the footage looks amazing! Yeah, it's a bummer that Vimeo's compressions don't allow us to see the full quality. YouTube does allow 4K streaming now, but I've always liked Vimeo better.

Also a bummer to read that the 4K model has the black sun spot. Hopefully a firmware update fixes this soon.

I can't wait for the link to the full quality video. Otherwise, Captain Hook you shot some really incredible stuff. It makes me want to sell my Cinema Camera and buy this as soon as it's released. Very excited to see that finished music video, and as well more stuff from you.

I never said they should leave it to post... simple pointed out that the BMCC is not unique with this issue and that it's easy to address in post.



I've yet to have it happen on any paying job. I've managed to get it to happen in tests when forcing the camera to produce it.

I also think it should be fixed if possible.

Vimeo's HTML5 player causes problems in some browsers and with some graphics cards. Creates gamma/levels issues. If you're using an Nvidia card in your PC there is a setting which scales video to legal levels in some apps. Causes the same issue with VLC too. Another option is to turn hardware acceleration off in your browser, or watch the video embedded on a page which still uses the (better) Flash player (I think).

Hi, just signed up for the forum after seeing this footage. Where can I get this camera? The footage is from a month ago and the website shows Q4 shipping. Is that a typo? Or won't it be available until the end of 2014? I usually get equipment from B&H in New York, but they show that it is only available for pre-order.

I resized the video to 2560x1066 and rendered it uncompressed and played it back (I couldn't play the 4k file directly for some reason). I love how clean the image looks and how nice the motion is. Only saw aliasing once which was on a guys shirt sitting down on the second to last shot.

Can't wait for this camera to come out!

What about the VERTICAL LINES problem? Any? Not even at 800 ASA?
No fixed patterns anywhere?
