6K Pro stuck on some screen like the clean feed

PostFri Aug 09, 2024 7:26 am

Hello everyone,

6K Pro user since a few months here.

Yesterday during a client project my camera somehow got stuck on a screen that looks like the clean feed but with focus peaking and frame guides. I desperately tried the swipe up/down thing, restarted the camera a few times, changed batteries, monkey tapped every button (and normally the first function button is set to on/off the clean feed but hey this is not the clean feed..) with no luck. Imagine the stress, making the whole team wait, etc.

I could save the shooting thanks to an old habit of always bringing backup cameras of other brands (in case of a firmware bug etc.).

I really like this camera but during the first few months I tried it as a B camera and got into lots of problems with Samsung T7 SSD disks and had to invest quite a sum into Angelbird cards. And now this.

Here is a video of what's happening, https://photos.app.goo.gl/xwvyX2C4e2EzkTdX8.

Am I missing something? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I didn't test yet the HDMI output yet and I can if that helps debug an eventual bug. But if that's a solution to get back the HUD it is just not acceptable for productions, sorry.

Best

My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Since Swipe Up/Down did nothing, I’d try to install a firmware release (other than the beta 8.6). Clean Feed set On doesn’t display the Grid as you still see. A restart or refreshed firmware hopefully corrects this apparent bug.

Another - if the communication to the lens gets stuck - the camera OS is just waiting for the lens and never comes up fully.
You can reset lens communication by pressing the lens release button. Maybe this helps.

Another test: with the camera shut off remove the lens and any media card in the camera, also anything connected over USB C. Try to boot the camera then. If it does, put the lens back on. Then the media.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

Thanks for the tip, Rick. I ended up reinstalling the firmware but any particular reasons for you to say "beta 8.6"? Or is it just because it is the latest beta? AFAIK I had the latest stable version but I think we never see "beta" in the setup menu even if it is the case so I wish I could check that before.

Thanks Robert, I wish I thought of the lens before reinstalling the firmware! I have a Novoflex adaptor for F mount lenses, do you think that might be related? "Waiting for the lens" made me think of it, with an adaptor in between the lens would never arrive I guess :) Never had any problems before, though.

I thought of removing the cards, though, it didn't help.

Yes, that could be the reason.
On my PCC4K sometimes when I change my standard Olympus 12-100 to a Meike Cine prime, the camera gets stuck after switching it on. Takes a few on off cycles to get it started, but after that it works.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

OK thank you Rick and all, I will keep in mind the tips if that ever happens again.

Yes, I don’t recommend installing any beta versions on a camera unless it’s just for the purpose of testing the beta. You can do it, but it might have unpredictable results which are fine if it’s a spare camera that you don’t rely upon.

Thanks Rick, do you know by any chance if that's possible to know if a beta version is installed. I'm pretty sure I saw 8.6 in the setup menu before the camera was bricked but I remember seeing the same thing after playing with the 8.7 beta.

PS: I meant Robert in my previous post, sorry about that.

I don’t think the camera system settings tell you if you have a beta version installed.
