BMPCC 6k - anamorphic mode question

Hi
just shot with 1.5x anamorphic lens with the camera in anamorphic 3.7k anamorphic mode. The footage does not look right. It has to be desqeezed at 1.5 and I never saw a setting for that. I fear that the footage is burned in at the wrong de-squeeze ratio. I am hosed?


we shot with 2 cameras (canon r5c where we did the de-squeeze in post which looks good) and the BMPCC. both stills attached

I think you have to right-click the footage in resolve and go to clip attributes. Then, change something to 1.5x Anamorphic. This is off the top of my head so there may be some inconsistencies. Or, did you mean de-squeeze in camera?

Thanks I tried that but it makes it look worse. I've shot everything so now i'm just trying to fix in post. here's the shot (desqueezed in camera already against my wishes) with that 1.5 clip attribute applied in resolve:

This was shot with Atlas Mercury Anamorphic 54mm 1.5X @ T4

Use the same method in Resolve to desqueze it. If you don't like it, you probably need to go with 2x anamorphic.

The mode you selected is a 6:5 aspect ratio which would be expected to be paired with a 2x anamorphic lens. On your camera monitor the image you are shown (for viewing purposes while shooting) will have a 2x desqueeze so you can preview what you’ll see in post. I don’t have on of the 6K cameras to verify this but that’s likely happening.

The recorded footage will have your lens 1.5x squeeze applied to that 6:5 resolution. In Resolve you have a few options to apply your 1.5 desqueeze to the footage. If you want to desqueeze in the media pool, you can use Clip Attributes as described previously.

The method I use is from the Edit page, Transform function in the Inspector. Unlink the X and Y axis. On the Y axis the default value is 1, but change that to 0.6667x and your image will appear normal. Leave the X axis at 1.

If you know your anamorphic lens performs the correct 1.5x squeeze regardless of the distance from the camera, then you’re fine. Some anamorphic adapters may not apply the full strength of the squeeze for Near objects say less than 5’ away. In that case, you would use a larger Y value such as 0.7143 for Near objects. You might need to experiment with the proper Y setting for Near objects if Near circles look odd.

I've noticed that when I bring my footage into resolve, under clip attributes all the clips already have the Pixel Aspect Ratio at 2.0

I'm going to tell you something you don't want to hear: You might like it less, but Que's instructions were correct and that's the correct geometry for that shot. If you wanted to get an optical 2.39:1 anamorphic image from this setup then you selected the wrong recording mode and/or used the incorrect lenses. It's very simple math:

• You shot with a 6:5 extraction of the sensor.
• Your lenses performed a 1.5x horizontal squeeze.
• 6:5 multiplied by 1.5x horizontally is 9:5 (1.80:1) which is what you're seeing when you changed the setting in your project's media pool.

If you wanted to get a 2.39:1 final aspect ratio by shooting with 1.5x anamorphic lenses then you should have recorded in a 16:9 mode and performed a small horizontal crop in post. As it stands, you'll have to crop from the top and the bottom of the frame right now.

thanks this was shot at different resolution and I'm not sure what they did to de-squeeze. I will continue to investigate.

It's okay, or as we say "It is what it is." It'll still have some of that anamorphic vibe to it but definitely not as much as if you used a 2.0x lens set. Chalk it up to an early career misunderstanding and file it away as a teachable moment:

Always perform camera prep and workflow tests before the shoot!

If you use the Edit page Transform method then in Clip Attributes you must specify square pixels. Then in Edit, apply the same squeeze factor to the Y axis as described (1/1.5x),
