K-Lite Codec installation - Media offline

PostThu Aug 29, 2024 6:02 pm

I am using DaVinci Resolve free to help create a simple wedding video for a neighbor that cannot afford one unfortunately ..
Everything was working fine until I installed K-Lite Codec installation made videos in my project to show "Media offline" in Resolve
the reason i installed K-Lite Codec is because i didnt see thumbnails for MP4 videos in windows 11

I upgraded resolve to the latest Resolve - didn't help

this is what the log is saying:

3rd Party Decode Err(Cannot find the codec for decoding.)
Failed to decode clip <D:\2024\eric_wedding\20240803_183631.mp4>,

thank you for any help on this issue,

I have seen K-Lite so thoroughly mess up a system that the only solution was a Clean Install of Windows.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

If you didn't see any thumbnails it's possible that the video clips are 10bit. The free version of Resolve only supports 8bit h264 & h265. What exact version of Resolve are you using?
Resolve Studio 20.0 build 49

I have only used Da Vinci 19 build 69 (free version) for windows 10 (also same problem in 19.0.1build 6 latest), and it doesnt seem to like the 8Bit HEVC 4K 25fps video from my gopro 8 (its supposed to be compatible in the list of codecs and no, im not re-encoding everything , I 'd rather use a different peice of software that works natively for free if thats the only way of getting it to work).
when importing it shows as "media offline"
seems to be the codec used and Da Vinci Resolve not recognising it, the audio plays , but no video (plays in windows media player, VLC & kDenlive fine, the HEVC codec is installed in windows 10)

heres a breakdown example of a clip from mediainfo 24.06
anyone know why? i'd like to give this sofware a try as kdenlive crashes a lot, but if it wont read the video (im not re-encoding everything every time) i'll give this a miss.

I dont think the bit support is the problem, because prior to K-Lite install they worked fine...
But I can check anyway

Yes Please, anyone that knows how to tell if it's 8-bit or 10-bit?

I'm running into a similar problem. Just imported some media via dropbox and some of the videos are coming up red Media Offline with audio only when I scrub thru them.

The .mov that does play is H.264 High L4.0

The .mov that is red Media Offline is H.265 Main 10 L4.0

and I'm assuming the "10" in the second one is the 10-bit indicator? Is that correct? That would explain why it's unavailable if so.

I would suggest you uninstall the K-Lite Codec pack. Windows already has the codecs for h264 and h265 built in which are utilized by the free version of Resolve.
Your video should play fine in the free version of Resolve without things like K-Lite.
As MediaInfo shows the clip as having a variable framerate, was it shot on a phone?
If you put the video clip on a file sharing site such as Dropbox or Google drive and post a link to it, I will happily check it for you.

Hitting same issues. Captured some old DV and HDV as DV-AVI files (best quality) and although adobe premiere will play them fine Da Vinchi 20 still will not. Is there a way to import codecs into Da Vinchi rather than have to use Premiere or the alternative hand Brake a whole pile of files into MOV/MP4 just so I can use them in Da Vinchi. Laborious and a pain in the A.
