Network/USB Switcher management while using WiFi

PostFri Sep 06, 2024 3:46 pm

Hi! I'm new here. I spent plenty of time searching for an answer to this, looking to see if anyone else has the same issue, and I am comfortable starting a new topic.

I recently updated our ATEM Mini Pro ISO and Mini SDI switchers. Once I did this, they began behaving very differently. In short, they started show up as network adapters. This caused my HP laptop to turn off its WiFi, which is a big problem when presenting/streaming from a remote location with no wired Ethernet connection.

I figured out how to stop the HP Service in Windows which turns off WiFi when it senses a physical connection. This works on the laptop assigned to me, on which I have Administrator access in Windows so I can do that. But I and others often use laptops on which we don't have Administrator access, which is required to make changes in the Services panel. So this isn't always a practical solution.

Is there a way to change the setup of the ATEM switchers to deactivate the network adapter portion and manage them over USB like we used to? I don't see it in the app, but maybe there's a config somewhere which would allow us to do this. I guarantee I'll never need this feature, because I never stream from my switchers regardless of BMD, Tricaster, or whatever...I always use a downstream encoder/recorder/keyer, and it's saved me multiple times over the years.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I think that might be a quirky HP issue.

Never seen it on any of our Macs or Windows machines (incl a few HP laptops).

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

This HP laptop has services called "HP DSU LAN/WLAN/WWAN Switching Service" and "HP LAN/WLAN/WWAN Switching UWP Service" which appear to be the culprit. Stopping these services prevents the WiFi from turning off.

Normally, one could set priority for network connections in the "Network & internet" settings. But this overrides that entirely.

The only bummer is that stopping those services requires opening the Services control panel with Administrator access. Thankfully, our IT agency understands that as a video guy I often need to make tweaks to my systems in the field, and they've given me a privileged account with that access. For someone who doesn't have that local admin access, I suppose they could have their IT admins deactivate those two services. This would require they turn off WiFi manually when connecting to a LAN and leave WiFi on when connecting to an AMP.

Either way, I know the culprit and can choose whichever workaround is best for my particular circumstance. Thank you again for your help!
