HDMI output from ATEM Mini Extreme to Mac Mini Thunderbolt 4

PostTue Sep 10, 2024 3:55 pm

I currently use an ATEM Mini Extreme and have an HDMI cable going from "HDMI Output 1" to an Elgato Cam Link 4K adapter which then plugs into a thunderbolt 4 port on a Mac Mini, so I can bring the feed up in OBS.

OBS can sometimes have odd moments with the Cam Link 4k, so my question is, can I simply buy an HDMI to thunderbolt 4 compatible USB-C cable and plug the ATEM directly into the Mac Mini without a capture card/adapter like the Cam Link 4K? Will it recognise the ATEM as a source in Mac OS?

Sorry complete noob here.

I think you may be confusing a Thunderbolt to HDMI OUTPUT cable (which lets you take an HDMI output from a Thunderbolt port from a Mac) with an HDMI INPUT solution - which would be something like an Ultrastudio 3G Mini Recorder that would let you capture HDMI and input it to your Mac via Thunderbolt?

However out of interest - why aren't you using the USB Type-C webcam functionality of the Atem Mini Extreme to connect the Atem to your Mac?

You are presumably using one USB Type-C connection to record to external SSD storage, but if you connect the other USB Type-C to your Mac using a USB C to USB C cable the Atem will appear as a standard UVC MJPG webcam source for OBS? Unlike the smaller Atem Minis that only have one USB Type-C connector, the Extreme and Extreme ISOs have two - so you can use one for recording and one as an output to a Mac/PC etc.
