URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 Firmware Update

PostThu Sep 19, 2024 6:20 am

I am aware there is a thread on this already that’s not getting any traction. But the UMP 4.6K G2 is very much alive and is still being advertised and sold by BMD and their vendors. For so long now, all the other cameras are getting firmware updates including Gen5 and other functionality while we have not seen anything for this camera. BMD, give this some love and at the very least support Gen5 color science in camera now.

Never happening unfortunately. The minute they bring out a new camera, all previous cameras get the silent treatment.

In Davinci Resolve, Camera raw button should allow you to select either Gen 4 or Gen 5 for your processing. Not what you want in camera, but a workaround for those using Resolve.

+1 for Gen 5 Color Science in the current G2 Camera.
Beneficial to BlackMagic as well as customers as Gen5 would spur sales.

Rick, I need it for when shooting in ProRes. My clients prefer ProRes over BRAW and they usually ask for it after the shoot - I turn over footage to them.

Then of course it makes sense to push for Gen 5.

God, I wish they’d do one last update to bring it to Gen 5 and as well give us the additional frame guides, including custom frame guide inputs. I could use 9:16 guides on the G2 since I do get asked to shoot for that with 16:9. That way the client has options. 4:5 would additionally be welcome.

On top the additional BRAW Constant Quality compression options of Q1 & Q3 would be most welcome.

I’d welcome any of the other features that have come to the Pockets. I honestly prefer the UMPG2 more than the P6KPro.

Now that they have done the PYXIS Monitor the PYXIS is very appealing, but it still doesn’t come close to comparing to the UMPG2 in terms of features. Internal ND, fast sensor readout, and 120 FPS max open gate are so amazing!

I’m just hoping that the URSA Mini Pro gets the URSA Cine treatment for an UCine LT model at a reasonable price. Otherwise, waiting for Gen 2 PYXIS before I give up my UMPG2.

Oh, Tim, yes the additional Q options would ve appreciated also! And guides ...

That camera is still a totally amazing capture device. BlackMagic does do awesome image creation. I just want some of the newer tools.

I love this versatile camera that I use actually in broadcast mode. Sorry that new cameras do not offer double mode use (broadcast/film) like URSA Mini Pro 4.6K...
all improvements are welcome ;)

Whereas I use it mostly for "standard" shooting. Studio and location, interviews, some scene capture, even occasionally shoulder rigged.

Abdominal a couple times I've run it into my Atem mini pro for recording with teleprompter or zoom meetings.

I'm loving working with it.

It’s very versatile and the IQ at 4.6K/24fps looks so much better than what I get on the BMPCC at 64/24fps that I used to complement it as a B cam. I actually use its weight to help with stabilized hand held shots that are in short duration and when a tripod cannot be conveniently positioned. I love this camera even over my previous Komodo and I’m not even sure if a Pyxis would be able to replace it down the road. The URSA12K is something to consider but with the advent of the UM Cine, I don’t think it’s a good buy at this time, and the Cine is just out of my budget. I would however rent it but so far the UMP46KG2 has been the most demanded by the folks i have been working with and a workhorse.

Why would/should I consider a new BM camera when they will not support the G2 with an update or service. Once we are out of warranty we are second class users with little or now service and long wait times, and no updates in 5 years. Imagine BM with GREAT customer service - it's easy if you try.
