Blackmagic App prores 4444

PostTue Sep 10, 2024 10:23 pm

It seems 'prores 4444' is not an option anymore on the app's version 2.0.000016. Just downloaded and installed it on a new iPhone 15 Pro Max (iOS 17.6.1, latest update as of right now). Anyone knows why, by any chance?

It disappeared very soon after the initial version. Probably somebody found out that the hardware is not up to it.
And then, what do you need it for? It makes sense in an Arri or when moving stuff between editing and VFX. But, come on, this is still a phone! ProRes 422 HQ is perfect for it, you'd just waste expensive Apple storage with 4444.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

I wonder if the iPhone and Android cameras are actually able to capture 4:4:4 or if they're limited to 4:2:2 in their architecture.

Does anybody know?

If they're limited to 4:2:2 then it's understandable why Blackmagic removed the 4:4:4 feature. But if they can capture 4:4:4 why not let customers decide if they want to use it or not despite how much storage it takes up.

From what I read, the iPhone 15 max is 422 10-bit. Older models and Androids (as of now) are 422 8 bit.
