Video Assist 12G 5" Running Very Hot

PostSun Oct 06, 2024 9:47 pm

I just purchased the Video Assist 12G 5" version. I haven't used it much yet but when I plug it into wall power it doesn't take long but begins to run extremely hot. Not sure how common this is, but it's at burn your fingers if you touch it too long hot.

Could this be a reason why battery life drains extremely fast with the unit as well? I can drain 2 NP 5000mHa batteries in about 20-30 mins without even having a source plugged into it.

Not sure if my unit is malfunctioning or if this is just common for this type of model.

Call your regional BMD Support to report. I think they’ll give you a RMA. Or return to your retailer.

My BMVA12G7, the larger 7” consumes much more power than the 5” and is cool to the touch. I think there’s an electrical malfunction.

How many nits are you running the screen? Depending on the amount of sunshine and the angle on the screen, you can likely use it at 1500 nits outdoors, rather than the maximum 2500 nits. I’ve used 2500 nits if I have mains power available (with a 100’ heavy extension cord).

I am not sure what the nits are. I was trying to find that setting to lower it a bit so my only thought is it is running and full power.

I'll give BMD Support a call. It worked for the commercial I got it for but I had to replace the batteries about 3 times and I powered it off when I wasn't needing it.

I bought two XL-B3 batteries from Sound Devices that are compatible with Sony NP-F970. I bought them when I bought the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II. They are each 7800mAh 57.72Wh. Depending on the shoot, I’ll use one battery in the Sound Devices recorder and one on the BMVA12G7 in case of power fluctuations or loss of power as I’m usually getting mains power to my cameras etc.
