This was a Haapoja/ARRI project. For ARRI, it was an opportunity to show off its optics and explain why they’re so expensive, and why some of its lenses aren’t even available to purchase. As you suggested earlier, it will be interesting if Haapoja and ARRI make a companion video on ARRI cameras. I would not be surprised if they’ve discussed it, and will be watching the reception that this video gets.
Note what Haapoja didn’t do. He wasn’t there to judge/evaluate ARRI lenses. I’m quite sure that ARRI knew, going in, that he wasn’t going to do that. Indeed, Haapoja sets the tone when he says, at the outset, that the people he was meeting “know more about lenses than I ever will”. It’s also clear that ARRI put some effort, at its end, into organising this.
I would think that Blackmagic Design’s marketing group will watch this video and think about whether it gives them some ideas. My own read of the video is that there’s something to be said for working with someone like Haapoja, who’s fairly well-known, and also well-liked. Look at the number of comments from viewers welcoming him back to YouTube. He brings something to the table that a talk by a high-end cinematographer/technical authority is unlikely to.
Since yesterday, the video has had 30,000 views, so it’s off to a good start on what is a pretty niche subject.
It’s interesting that Haapoja believed that he could “sell” an hour long video on YouYube about an inherently technical subject, especially after a year’s absence.
