Bizzarre audio loss

PostThu Dec 26, 2024 5:45 am

I was reviewing a half dozen timelines for sync issues.

I wanted to hear something better so I unplugged the cable to my sound and plugged in my headphones.
checked it with headphones, unplugged them put back cable to sound system (there was a pop)
now, no sound can be heard,

yes, meters show levels bouncing,

click to another timeline, sound can be heard.
back to the first timelin, no sound can be heard.

copy that timeline and paste on the one I can hear and I head it there.
back to original timeline, can't hear it.

crate a new timeline, and paste it. can't hear it.

play the source media outside of davinci in quicktime, I hear sound fine.

I open a third timeline and it's gone quite as well. this had sound 10 minutes ago.
I open a fourth, now it's gone quiet. it's spreading??

all along meters show sound.

now only the one timeline, the second one I opened, plays sound.

I feel like I have entered the twilight zone.

any ideas as to what i going on here?

Full disclosure, I have only been playing with Davinci for a few months and relatively clueless.

I am resolve 19. Mac Pro 7.1 (2019) Monterey, audio is headphones out

I fixed it somehow. I kept changing the audio out in Davinci preferences to HDMI 1 & 2 and both have audio, to Mac speakers, have audio, to headphones, have audio, plug back in sound system, no audio. but I hear everything else on the sound system from the same Mac.

plugged in cheap external speakers, I hear sound. WTF?
back to sound system, now I hear sound on timelines that, two minutes ago, nothing. more WTF

no explanation I can come up with. perhaps I just exited the twilight zone.

I think this is not a Resolve problem -- it's an OS setup error. It is true you have to setup your sound output first, verify that it works, and then launch Resolve.

This is exactly what I am experiencing.

All projects have sound except the one I am working on (and tried to do a V/O recording)

I can record but cannot hear it at playback.

Just before it flunked out I got a feedback noise from the speakers before I clicked the m. That was the last sound I have heard from the project.

PS: An attached log file about this problem can be found on my thread about this problem. We might both have posted this at the same time, not seeing the other's thread when checking before posting.

I have the same problem. In my case it concerns only the one project I am working on. All others have sound. Sound just flunked out in the middle of work for no apparent reason.

I just got my sound back.

I muted the bus and unmuted it again and suddenly the sound was back.

Now, that's an interesting clue. Maybe an internal switch inside Resolve is getting stuck, and turning it off and on again gave it a kick that brought the audio back.

I've had similar situations where audio momentarily "went away," but I just copied and pasted the entire session into a new timeline, and suddenly everything started working again. So I have seen things like this happen.

Marc,
seems this happens when the project "sits". My first occurrence happened when I went back to something I finished a month before. I go back now to the same material and it is happening again to SOME timelines but not all in a project. these ALL played normal last time I worked on this project.

the copy and paste to new project "fix" does not work anymore, at least not with all timelines. so far one copy paste fixed it and the second did not. sound meters are blasting away, it there.

experiment: new project, check settings for audio, which is system in out, headphones out.
correct frame size and rate.

I paste the effected timeline. No sound

I create a new timeline using the Master uncut UHD file that the bad timeline was cut from.
it HAS sound.

paste the effected timeline on the end of a timeline that does play sound, sound plays fine.

pure twilight zone stuff.

have you learned anything new? I see many others posting with similar vanishing audio.
