Made a video:

Hope that Blackmagic Design can take a watch and hear out my proposals for ways to improve the Blackmagic Design Slate & Project Metadata for BMD Cameras and DaVinci Resolve.

Proposed Updates for Blackmagic Slate & Project Metadata

PostMon Dec 30, 2024 2:17 am

Thanks Tim!

As people have said (to me) before, it’s helpful to put the gist of your video in words in the description.

I agree that for 12A/1 each component should end up in a different field. To me this has always been scene, angle, take rather than scene, shot, take as in your video.

Here’s my report where I ask for updating the order of fields in the metadata browser:
viewtopic.php?p=1021075

Finally, totally agree that it’d be great to use the cloud AND other computer-to-camera methods to set the camera up with metadata for a given project.

The reason I went with Scene, Shot, Take in my video is because of how Blackmagic currently has this labeled in the camera manual. But as well, they already use Angle for when you choose WS, MS, or CU. If you choose any of those options in the Slate Page then those populate the Angle Field.

Now, could Blackmagic switch it so that those populate the Shot Field and then the Letter populates the Angle Field? Sure. But for now I was attempting to give them the easiest and fastest solution. Especially since Smart Bins they have the Shot category able to be selected.

At this point I lost track of how far back I first started asking for these updates. But it has probably been around 5-years.

Got it. Well if they did it either way it’d be way better than now!

Thank you for making this video. This is so long overdue. I also like your proposed idea of additional metadata. It would add that since most of those metadata are only needed to be entered once for the entire production or project, it will be nice if a text file containing the information in an XML or JSON format can be added to an SD or CFAST and selected from the menu, similar how you add a LUT today. I think you have proposed something like this as well.

I think so, too. Videos and images should support a well written description, not replace it. ;)
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thank you! Agreed on long overdue. That's why I felt the need to make this my first "YouTube" video. I will be making more in the new year as that is my New Year's Resolution.

Yes, I proposed that in the video just before I wondered about using Blackmagic Cloud to do it as well. That was primarily for future cameras that can connect the Blackmagic Cloud. But the SD, CFast, or CFExpress Card idea was floated.
