bmcc 6k pro - audio sync problem

PostTue Jan 28, 2025 5:21 pm

I'm playing back footage on Davinci Studio(Jan 2025 update) and AUDIO sounds great but not in sync with video...using following codec and settings:

PRORESHQ
4KDCI
ULTRA HD

PRORESPXY
4KDCI
ULTRA HD

Anyone with similar problems?

thanks.

Are you sure it's the camera causing this problem?
  • Are we talking about audio recorded in-camera or audio recorded externally?
  • If it's externally recorded, how are you syncing? What are your timecode base settings?
  • If it's internal, how are you sending audio to the camera?
  • If your audio source is wireless, do you know how much latency that system has?
  • Do you have any sync points to compare agains (e.g., a slate clap)?
  • If so, have you checked the waveform panel in the media pool to see if the audio is actually out of sync or if it is your computer making it seem out of sync?

bmcc 6k pro - audio sync problem

PostWed Jan 29, 2025 3:32 am

I use XLR audio from house mics on stage including lavelier mics transmitting over WiFi as well as my own mics placed near my cameras usually about 10 to 20 meters from the source of the audio. In post most of the tracks agree if they are from the same source with the same technology (WiFi), but my mics are always little different when I examine the audio at the frame/subframe level. I bring all the tracks to the same place as much as is possible given the different distances from the sound source depending upon the changing positions of people on the stage.

The best way to confirm the audio matches the video after those manipulations is playback of the rendered final video. In real life of course audience members seated at the back of a theatre hear the live sound later than people sitting in the front row. But of course no one in the audience says the sound is out of sync with the visuals we see. However when we watch a video our brains and ears can notice even a one frame difference in video and audio. So timecode is great place to get us close to sync sound, but you can use what tools you have in post to improve upon that when using multiple mics.

Thank you both tremendously for answering my question.

My audio was recoorded in BMCC 6K PRO CINEMA POCKET CAMERA (SUPER 35MM) camera through:

1) AZDEN SGM - 250MX CINE MIC W/ MINI XLR INPUTS: 2 mics
2) ON CAMERA MICS: 2 mics

Audio was NOT rendered yet.

But...even on the on camera playback...the audio was still out of sync with video.

I played samples -- from both mic input selections -- on FIMNAL CUT PRO (FCP) and same audio was out of sync with video.
Recording cards are: SANDISK cfast 2.0 512 GB EXTREME PRO...and WISE 4K PORTABLE SSD

I also shot samples on SONY A7 iv using a different RODE mic on the camera and played it back on both DAVINCE RESOLVES STUDIO 19 and current fcp -- no sync problems at all.

I can test the WISE 4K ssd on the same SONY A7IV...top see if no problems exist on the card...but cannot do that with the cfast 2.o...unless I rig the SONy up tom accept.

I will, again, go through both of your advice.

Thanks again.

Could you have accidentally filmed in VFR mode on the P6K?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

went through another section of the LCD menu:

RECORD

Project Frame rate: 24fps

OFF SPEED RECORDING: OFF

off speed frame rate -- it was at 50 fps ( accidentally touched while maybe going through various menu checks)
Switched it to: 24 fps

Problem solved!

Works fine on a simple quick dump of footage to my monitor screen -- audio-video in sync.

Tried this on Resolve Studio and FCP and it's all good.

Thanks for all's help and advice.

Now I'm rocking-rolling with BMCC 6K PRO

REALLY...realllllllllyyyyyyy...wanna thank ALL of you for being so cool and informative in your replies.

I kinda got away from the indie filming community for awhile...doing my own thing; troubleshooting and figuring out solutions on my own -- reading; studying youtube vids, etc.

But then, you get bogged down with so much other "stuff" while still hitting daily deadlines so you can hit the monthly ones to forecast to the "powers that be" that you can forecast a few big projects on an annual basis.

It's all good when the entire ecosystem of equipment and tech operates on a solid, assembly line level.

But...

When stuff breaks down and deadlines pile up ( I work as a one man band for a California Institutional correctional state agency...haven't even mentioned the ******** of politics and personalties' pissing contests all over the place on a daily basis ) I'm the last one to go to my bosses and tell them I cannot accomplish all on my own with a meager, meager budget.

It's my low budget indie filmmaking background and all.

So...long winded...again:

thank you thank you for helping me out on a real quick notice.
same for the BMD tech team -- hugely helpful.

Let's MAKE MOVIES!!
