BM App Android vs iOs

PostThu Jan 30, 2025 1:06 pm

Hello everyone, how are you?

As I could see, the applications for recording on iPhone are much more robust on iPhone than on Android...

Does iPhone have a hardware encoder in HEVC 422 10bit? or only use software?

When testing footage in CapCut, 422 10bit edits well on an iPhone 15 pro, I have not tested it on a high-end Android yet.

I have seen that Xiaomi 14 ultra in its native app has many problems recording LOG in HEVC 4k 422 bit... from a low bitrate, overheating and an unstable framerate.

Now Samsung supposedly brings the Galaxy Log, but we don't know if it can do it in 8k and with what bitrate.

The iPhone has hardware for HEVC decode and encode.

Yes, but only 4:2:0? or also in 4:2:2?

Nvidia just now with RTX 5000 series can decoding HEVC 4:2:2.

Since several camera apps can record HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 and the iPhone is playing those back without stuttering, it should have the hardware. Anyway, without any protective shell I can record on the iPhone for an hour in that format.
But you'd have a hard time fitting an RTX 5K series card in there ;-)

Indeed, the iPhone 15/16 seems to handle the hevc 422 very well, both encoding when recording video, and also decoding without problems using capcut (until now I only tried with capcut).

Although I didn't find documentation indicating that it has hardware acceleration, it seems that way... it's quite likely that it uses "Metal".

On the other hand, Android has many problems with HEVC 422, and supposedly a Snapdragon 8 elite is more powerful than an A18 pro.

I would also wonder that taking into account the power that an iPhone currently has, and knowing that an iPad has Davinci Resolve... it would be interesting one day to see Davinci Resolve running on an iPhone using an external monitor.

No problem with HEVC 422 on iPad Pro in all apps I’ve tried.

Resolve for iPad doesn’t have video clean feed as far as I can see unless there is some magic button I’m missing. LumaFusion can send a video signal to an external monitor by HDMI (and USBC I think) so it is possible. FCP for iPad doesn’t do it. Something for Resolve for iPad in a future update perhaps.

Yes, I read that for iPad, there is no clean HDMI output to solve...

However, it would be interesting to see it one day resolved on an iPhone.
