ATEM Mini only shows Sony camera image on Input 1

Hey Everyone.

I am installing a podcast studio for a client and I'm hitting a snag that I and other companies do not have an answer for.

I have 3 Sony A6400 cameras in the studio, those connect to a panel with NUETRIK HDMI 2.0 pass through connectors, those run a very short distance through wall into a second pass through connector, then out the other side into the ATEM.

To make it simpler, the flow is this... Camera >> HDMI cable >> wall connector >> through the wall with a 2 foot HDMI cable >> wall connector #2 >> HDMI cable into ATEM Mini.

The cameras are running at 30fps/ 1080p.

I'm using Hi speed, 4k UHD cable.


My issue is I'm only getting an image on Input 1 of the ATEM mini. Inputs 2,3 and 4 show nothing.

What I've found.....

* If I remove ONE HDMI pass through connector (there are a total of two being used. One on each side of the wall) Everything works PERFECTLY.

* It doesn't matter which side I remove the connector from, as long as there's only one in the equation, everything works... which rules out a bad connector

* I tried a Panasonic LUMIX camera and everything works perfectly with BOTH pass through connectors in use.

* Cable length doesn't seem to be the issue because in total, its only about 10 feet worth of cabling.


So in conclusion... I can't determine if this is an ATEM issue, a setting on the SONY, the SONYs don't like the extra connectors but the Panasonics do.

I'm at a loss and it's impossible to get in touch with a person at Sony tech support.

Any help here would be incredibly appreciated.

Seems signal of Sony are powerfully than Panasonic. Ever connected cameras directly to mixer, but I know there are some active connector with signal amplifier, seems you need of this kind of connectors

I tried an active repeater in the middle of the chain and this solved my issues. Im shocked Sonys output would be this weak.

On 4 input Atem Minis HDMI 1 is different in capability to HDMIs 2-4. HDMI 1 will accept an RGB or 4:2:2 YCbCr input, HDMIs 2-4 are 4:2:2 YCbCr (aka YUV) only.

On the 8 input models HDMI 1 and 2 are RGB capable, HDMIs 3-8 are 4:2:2 YCbCr only.

(NB YCbCr 4:2:2 is also what SDI uses)

Could it be the Sony is outputting RGB rather than 4:2:2 YCbCr via HDMI? (Is there an HDMI output setting option anywhere in the Sony?)

There are other differences between the two types of HDMI inputs - so it could be something else.

If you need to convert between RGB and 4:2:2 YCbCr HDMI then Decimator MD-LXs can be configured to do that in HDMI in, HDMI out mode. (I don't think BMD's equivalent has that functionality - at least I don't think I've seen it as a config option?)

Search “Sony a6400” on the forum and a history of Atem Mini/a6400 incompatibility will be revealed. In one thread the poster had some success changing the output from auto to 1080p.

Pass thru plates may not have the aesthetic you’re going for but the signal will pass. The alternative is auditing different cable/bulkhead configurations.

Sonys output may be incredibly weak compared to the Panasonic cameras. With the use of a repeater, the Sonys work just fine with all pass through connectors.
