New ATEM output issue

PostTue Feb 11, 2025 2:26 pm

I am having an issue and feel like I am missing something basic. I have a setup as shown below. There is a few more things but should be irrelevant to the issue. I am sending a 1080P 29.97 signal from the TC1 on loop. The videohub is receiving it just fine and shows on the small screen.
1. When the signal is routed to the NEC or Epson projectors it works perfect without issue.

2. When the signal is routed to the ATEM and the PGM or AUX outs are routed to the NEC projectors, it shows no HDMI signal on the projectors. At the same time, the video hub is showing the signal in the screen so I know its coming back fine. The Epson projector will show the signal fine via the SDI input.

Things to note:
• The ATEM and converters are all set to level A as the TC1 only supports level A. I did this as I have tried a 1080P 60 signal as well but it doesn’t fix anything.
• The videohub panel always shows a signal no matter how I have it routed.
• The EPSON is the only thing I have to look at the details of an SDI signal with and it shows the same info for both signals (direct routed and from ATEM PGM):
SDI Link Mode: Auto-Single
Sync Detected: SDI Detected
PayloadID Detect: SDI Detected
Resolution: 1920x1080
Refresh Rate: 29.97p
Color Sampling: YCbCr4:2:2
Pixel Depth: 10bit
SDI type: HD
Color Space: Auto(BT.709)
H-Freq: 33.704khz
V-Freq: 29.970hz

Last weird thing is that when the SDI Multiview output is routed to the NEC projectors it works. Just not the AUX or PGM outs.
The projectors are: Epson EB-PU2216B, NEC NP-ME372W
What am I missing?

The ATEM is new out of the box. I am going to try a decimator in place of the converters tomorrow.

Update: Putting in a decimator in place of the BMD HDMI converter works perfectly fine.

I am going to take another converter and projector and place it next to the ATEM to do some more testing. I am fairly certain the converter was on the latest firmware but I will verify all tomorrow.

I did see another post similar to this one from a bit ago but it was not resolved. Hopefully BMD support can chime in.

No need to set the converters to level A, since you are not outputting sdi from the devices, only hdmi. We have encountered similar weirdisms in the past. A Decimator LX strangely solved the issue, as in your case.

You’ve tried pgm outputs like color or media player and they did not display either?

Another update.

I was able to bring another converter (verified to latest firmware) and another projector right next to ATEM.

Hooked directly PGM output (no router) it does not work. Hooked to outputs of 1-8 of ATEM it does not work. Decimator works in all scenarios and I even tried every HDMI output setting on the decimator (RGB444, etc...) and it ALWAYs works. I even tried SDI to HDMI directly and SDI to Scaler to HDMI and it never fails.

It is definitely a compatibility issue from the converter to the ATEM without a doubt.

Now the rant. This fiscal year I have upgraded a lot of systems and have easily spent upwards of $15K this year on BMD gear alone throughout my two complete studios and Auditorium space. I am looking on building out a 26' mobile trailer with a Constellation 8k as of now just after July 1 and to be honest I am a little concerned over little incompatibilities like this. I know it seems trivial but I like to know what issues I am going to run into equipment wise so I can spec out the correct equipment. This issue makes no sense to me at all and I want to understand it. I know I can spend a few hundred more dollars on decimators but I currently have 10+ converters and if they wont work with their own brand what else will be incompatible in brand? If i get approval for $30K I don't have the luxury of easily going back for more money because something did not work nice together.
