Refreshing source of clip

PostFri Mar 07, 2025 7:57 pm

It often happens that I import external video clips or images into project and after I decide what to do with them, they need some tweaking outside of DR. I do that, save updated file at the same location using the same file name, but I cannot easily make DR reload updated content.

For example, I tried removing item from project and adding it again, but it still shows old, not refreshed content (like there is some cache loaded instead, even if there is no cache turned on in project).

Actually, the quickest way I found out so far is to close DR and start it again. Then it properly loads updated content.

As user I would expect that option to be like right clicking image or clip in Media panel and having option Refresh but that is not the case.

Is there a way to simply instruct DR to reload specific item from source and disregard (or recreate) any cache if it exists?

Until things change, your best option is to save new versions with a new name, and then do a Replace operation from the bins in the project.

There is a whole chapter in the manual which you can open from help menu about relinking and conforming clips. If you are not working with images, but with clips, new feature they added I think last time, is resync that allows live connection between folder being monitored and media pool. It doesn't yet support images sequences. In regards to making changes to files outside of resolve, probably you are better of finding more suitable workflow. Resolve does its own thing and can do a lot if you use it that way and will give you headaches if you try to use it differently.

I did try that but I found out that replace works only for clips on the first track. Upper layer tracks cannot be updated that way. I have to remove old clip and insert new one manually. This is quite tedious process.

I tried relinking too and was not happy. To much hassle and if I recall it actually did not work in this case. Problem is DR for some reason has some internal caching so reloading file with same name does not work until that cache is cleared and so far the only sure way to clear it is to restart DR.

I guess I am to different in thinking expecting that when I select one clip as DR already knows everything it should (path to external file) it should be as simple as having refresh option to reload that specific clip.

After I posted this I found out that this is not new issue. Users are questioning this for more than five years, so I guess will will not be resolved soon.

Making yourself familiar with "reconfirm from bin" might help. But correct TC is essential!

+1 a simple "refresh media source" in clip operations would do the trick
