PYXIS 6k XLR Audio Level

PostMon Mar 10, 2025 9:31 pm

I had an issue today with XLR into my camera where the audio was fluctuating consistently. I tested with a tone generator. Attached is a photo of the waveform. In no regular pattern, the mic level would go from -18 sometimes down to -42db. It didn't do it with 3.5mm or camera microphones. I'm connected with a Rode NTG-3 and phantom power. It's typically between a 20-30 second smooth and gradual ramp down to the lower level, then back up, after an inconsistent amount of time. Anyone else seen this behavior?

Also, I'm on camera firmware 9.2.1.

Just in case you haven't done this.. Have you checked with another cable? That spike looks suspicious.

I should have mentioned, there was occasional ambient conversation in the room. But I don’t think it’s a cable since the ramp down and up is so smooth. The spike was likely just a sound in the room.

I wouldn’t pay much attention to the spikes. More so the consistent tone sound, and the ramps that go up and down.

Have you tested that mic on another camera? Have you tested another XLR mic on the Pyxis?

Might be time to call BMD Support.

Could it be that the phantom power is fluctuating?
I would do a test with a dynamic mic if possible to rule phantom power issues out.
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

I started a case with BMD. I’ve used this setup a bunch of times. I’ll try another phantom powered mic and see if it continues.

Maybe. Haven’t seen anything like that before. I’ll test another mic.

Well I got to the bottom of the issue. Apparently a bad cable that was laying on the camera power was causing that inconsistent level attenuation.
