Fix for BSOD issue in Davinci 19.x

PostWed Jan 08, 2025 2:41 pm

For several days now I have been suffering from BSOD (or more precisely GSOD because I am using the latest Canary Insider builds).

Problem with dxgmms2.sys - stop code: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" (Error 700, 702).

To cause a BSOD (GSOD) to appear, all I need to do is open the project and run the preview, or move the cursor over one of the elements on the timeline. Interestingly, a few days ago everything worked perfectly stably.

This BSOD/GSOD has nothing to do with:
- Windows version
- DaVinci Resolve version
- System file corruption
- Driver problem (NVIDIA)
- Reinstalling DaVinci Resolve
- Hardware stability problem (CPU, GPU, RAM, SSD)

The problem (probably) only affects NVIDIA cards that use GPU processing mode set to CUDA!

Workaround: Just change CUDA to OpenCL, but you will lose a lot of performance (-40% for me on RTX 4070 Ti).

Delete the .cache file and restart DaVinci Resolve - it will then prompt for Neural Optimization.
Cache files can be found in C:\Users\[YOUR USER NAME]\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\DVIP\Cache directory (use your USER NAME).

If the CUDA cache file is corrupted, it causes BSOD/GSOD when opening the project. Re-Optimise Neural Engines will create a new CUDA cache file and solve the problem.

Oh, yeah, I'm having bsods in DR too, but not every day. The pattern is as follows - I switch from Edit to Fusion pages or playback some transition. Have had 2 or 3 bsods within a week or two. Premiere Pro or AE have never caused bsods on my rig. It's totally a DR thing...
I'll try the Cuda cache workaround tomorrow

The problem is I'm not on an insider build...

You should be using CUDA with Nvidia GPUs not openCL. Go to nvidia.com and check that you have an up to date Studio driver. When installing the driver select Custom and then Clean Install.
An error 700 can be caused by the GPU running out of memory, or if you have a Virtual Desktop Monitor display adapter, that should be disabled.
A BSOD is normally caused by a hardware, and not a software problem. ;)

I would go a step further and do a DDU cleaning of drivers then the studio driver re-install.

Hi, Charles, I always do a clean install. All my drivers are up to date as well as the OS. I tried the DDU as well, so far it did not help. I repeat - DR is the only software causing bsods. That is waht puzzles me. Literally every other software and AI tool I use hasn't given a single bsod for years. I even started to forget what a bsod looks like untill I installed DR.

Unbelievable! This worked!!!! The stress this has caused me is off the charts. I ordered a new computer because I was so convinced that this issue was related to a my laptop's board mounted RTX 2060! You are a gentleman and a scholar sir!

Hi, when playing, error 700 or blue screen pops up. Intel 13700k processor, MSI 4090 Gaming X Trio video card. I reinstalled the system, rolled back to driver 566.36, cleared the cache, nothing helps. Before that, there was a 4080 super card, there were no problems. Help, what should I do?
