Is there a video equivalent of audio beatmapping?

PostWed Apr 02, 2025 1:06 pm

I'm stuck for a way to simply explain what I want to do, so please bear with me, anyone who can be bothered with this request!

It's a "syncing video with audio" thing. In audio, there is a thing called beatmapping https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatmapping This enables you to plot a click which speeds up and slows down. I use this extensively when making drum covers of songs which weren't recorded to a click. I'm facing a unique situation where I wish to record a cover of a song, which was recorded to a click, but I wish to sync it to a live video. The music on the live video speeds up and slows down. Is there any way, within Davinci Resolve, to do a kind of beatmapping of the audio, on the live video, and drag it around to match with the beats on the recorded-to-click video?

I basically want to sync the live (no click) video to the recorded (to a click) audio. This means the live video needs to speed up and slow down. If anybody, who can make sense of this, can help, thanks in advance.

On the audio side of things.... i'm not sure about the automated way or a plug in, there might be, and Reynaud Venter usually offers good information on fairlight, so he will know.

But how about elastic wave. Have you tried that. Its a manual way to retime audio, but its quite good.

I think it was meant to be used to match differnt takes from ADR, music or SFX. Not sure if that could be something you can use. Elastic wave has been updated with new alghrotims for different use a

On the video side of things, you can try to use either video retiming features in edit page or in fairlight you can maybe use video scroller filmstrip to be very precise for syncing video and audio. You should be able to find ore info in manual and online tutorials.

Manual is avilable from the help menu.

Not sure how easy that will be but...the Retime feature (right click on the clip in the timeline) will allow that.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Thanks for the responses both of you. I've only had a rough play, but now that I know to search for "retiming clips", I've landed on a YT tutorial, which so far seems to enable what I'm trying to do. Cheers!
