How to increase the area of White Balance Picker

PostSat Apr 05, 2025 12:47 am

I want to increase the area of the white balance picker, so instead of it using 1 pixel to adjust white balance, it uses an average of the pixels in like, say 50px x 50px. I remember seeing in a video some time ago that this was possible, but it might have been a fluke.

I am not aware of any user adjustments here.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I'm also wondering about this. I thought that you could click-drag the picker over an area to average it out. This doesn't seem the case.

There sure must be a way to do this? Especially for grainy footage this is essential. A singe pixel sample is useless.

Could put a temporary node before and put a ton of blur on it before clicking.

Not very user friendly though.

Putting your NR node as the very first node would be a solution. The religious discussion if NR should be first or last has been had many times here, so will not rehash.

The eyedropper in PS lets you choose how far it averages. But not seen that functionality for WB tool in Camera Raw or LR. Maybe there is a reason?

Cullen Kelly has stated he is not a fan of the Temp/Tint sliders on the Primary wheels. And I agree it just doesn't 'look right'. Follows his recommendation on WB

In Adobe Camera Raw you can actually click-drag to make a selection box that is used for the white balance when you release. Best solution I've seen so far as it also allows you to pixel click, no need to change settings :)

Nice tip with the blur, but manual white balance might take the same time ;)
