ATEM Micro Camera Panel

PostFri Apr 04, 2025 10:09 pm

I really like this panel. But why, oh why, did they not put an ethernet jack on it? I don’t sit close enough to my Atem to use usb or Bluetooth.

I believe the camera control panels do not actually connect directly to the ATEM, they need to connect to a computer running the ATEM software, so you can connect that computer as far as you like via ethernet then plug the micro camera panel into that.

Well, actually the Atem Camera Control Panel (4 Joysticks) has got two Ethernet ports build in.

.. this is a Toy, I am very disappointed.
Absolute useless in professional (non Blackmagic) broadcast environment. Once again we have to resort to third-party products like cyanview or skaarhoj - which costs 3000 -5000 Euros to shade a single camera.

- A Camera Control Panel should be able to connect directly to the camera, either via ethernet or sdi.
- Nobody needs to (can) control 8 cameras with one unit - this will never happen in a live scenario.
- Why not a dedicated power input jack, why always this USB-C nonsense (one for connection and charging??)

...
I asked myself the same question as Robert.

BMD, why didn't put a network connector on this device ?? :?:

It's a really good concept for a market segment that needs a user-friendly and affordable CCU option.

Why not a LAN connector, BMD ?? Why ? :?: Why not ??  :? :? :? :? :?

Because this panel remote controlling Atem Software .. Not camera .. Ant Atem Software send commands to Camera .. This is the same situation as ATEM micro panel ..

Indeed build for an entirely different market.

The small market where you have control panels on USB-C or bluetooth connected to a Laptop to control the Atem.

Meaning a lot less processing inside the controller, Just some USB data pushing.. The product is meant for small studio work. Not for big production setups..

Meanwhile it opens up a market for DIY guys since it will be just months before the Bluetooth and USB core are exposed and ready to interface towards a small linux box or micro processor.
Or maybe even companion.. ;)

I am just finishing off my design for a single camera CCU controller.
It is designed as a direct drop in for a Sony RC1500 replacement. It controls the camera via the return SDI (no ATEM required). It connects to an additional interface where it sends i2c commands that convert it to BMD compatible SDI. The interface can have up to 4 i2c panels connected.

I will soon be making an ethernet version that can connect to the camera via an ATEM.
The Blackmagic panel is superbly manufactured that I can not replicate but I have kept my price to below $1000.

It would have been perfect for our uses if it had PoE and direct ethernet connectivity. I need the compact layout for travel. What a miss.

...well of course. The micro control panel is intended for use exclusively with Blackmagic cameras, just like the non-micro panel that preceded it.

In my use case, I frequently shade three different Constellations at the same time (we produce three concurrent, yet distinct, live streams for these events). On a single production network, however.

We started shading using the Atem software. Then we upgraded to a single Camera Control Panel. That was better, but still funky. Then, for the bigger national and world events, we rented additional Camera Control Panels, so that each Atem had its own dedicated controller. This worked best, but took up lots of space at my station.

So this new little boy, the Micro control panel, would have been perfect for me if it had an ethernet port. Hard buttons for eight cameras (instead of flipping between two banks) is a good trade off of not being able to adjust more than one camera at a time. However, now I need three computers at my station, or I need to switch between ATEM's on one computer to shade the three lines. That is a PITA.

Still, I have a huge live event coming up the first week of June and I would love to get my hands on one and test during the event.
