Cannot find appropriate codec

PostSun Apr 13, 2025 7:22 pm

I have never had this error ever all the years of using Davinci Resolve.

But with version 20 Beta 1, every time I try rendering a project with the encoder set to AUTO or NVIDIA it always fails with this error.

If I set the encoder to NATIVE, it renders the project.

Any has any clue, what could be causing this issue?

If it is a bug, developers, please take note, so it can be addressed in the upcoming updates.

The devs can only help if you provide the logs, as stated in the FAQ.

Is your RTX 3060 driver version 570.65 or newer? It needs to be for Resolve 20.
This is what to do to provide log and NFO files.

What res are you trying to render? I had the experience that NVENC can't do very large resolutions, and won't do odd ones

Hello Charles,

Thank you for that input. I am currently running nVidia Studio Driver 572.83. Still the same issue.
I managed to get the logs, I have already added it to my post.

Hello Lucas,

I have tried both 1080p & UHD resolutions. They both fail.

On 4-12, with project Conference 2025 loaded, your first render of a 931 frame clip worked.

Then the 2nd render attempt of this:

E:\Day 01 (Session 01).mp4

Failed with an NVIDIA encoder error.

Then you did several more successful renders.

What was the difference between the first render that worked, and the 2nd render that failed?

And for all the rest of the renders that worked, did you select Native?

Can you provide a screenshot of the Deliver page Video settings for a render that fails?

Thank you, Dwaine, for looking into this.

Yes, all the successful renders were with the ENCODER set to NATIVE.

Here is a screenshot of the Delivery page settings, that fail.

Thanks. I've done a test on a similar system (RTX4090 instead of 3090, close as I can get) using your driver and project and Deliver page settings and file naming, and it works fine and is using the GPU.

Might be an issue with your NVIDIA driver install. Please download the 572.83 STUDIO driver from the NVIDIA download site and run the installer. Select the Custom install option, then select the Clean install option.

See if that helps. If you have the same issue, send a new Resolve log and also send a Windows System Information .NFO file. Generate that by opening the Windows System Information app, then selecting File - Save. That will generate an .NFO file. Close System Information, then double click the .NFO file to make sure it opens in System Information. Sometimes the first attempt makes a corrupt file.

Hello Dwaine,

I just followed your instructions and downloaded the Studio drivers 572.83 off the NVidia site.

Did a custom install with the Clean Install Option Checked.
After the driver install, I restarted the PC and tried to render using the auto settings for the ENCODER and it still failed with the same error.

I have generated the Davinci Resolve logs before I exited DR and also attached the NFO file as requested (had to ZIP the file as the size was over 2MB)

Hope you and your team are able to figure out where the problem lies.

Topaz has been causing issues with Resolve 20. To see if that could be involve in the rendering issue, please try the following:

Disable 3rd party OFX Plugins in Resolve for Windows

If 3rd party OFX plugins are causing Resolve not to start, do the following to troubleshoot:

In File Explorer, go to this folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX

In the OFX folder is a folder called Plugins

Rename the Plugins folder to Plugins.orig

Now Resolve should start.

In the Plugins folder will be folder for each OFX package you've installed. Move those out of the Plugins folder one at a time, to figure out which is causing the issue with Resolve.

Of course, change Plugins.orig back to Plugins when you do that.

Re: RENDER FAILED! Cannot find appropriate codec (SOLVED)

Hi Dwaine,

Just wanted to provide an update – the issue is resolved now. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what I did:

1. Performed a clean installation of Windows 11 Pro (formatted the PC and started from scratch).
2. Installed all the latest Windows updates.
3. Updated all Microsoft Store apps to their latest versions.
4. Installed DaVinci Resolve 20 Public Beta 1.
5. On first launch, Resolve prompted me to update the NVIDIA drivers.
6. Closed Resolve, then:
Downloaded and installed the NVIDIA Studio Driver v572.83 using the Clean Install option.
7. Launched Resolve 20 again:
Completed the Neural Engine update.
Imported my pre-format database backup.
8. Opened my project and attempted a render with ENCODER set to AUTO.
9. Encountered a new error (screenshot and logs were captured).

10. Suspected the issue was due to missing fonts in a TEXT+ Fusion composition.
11. Installed the missing font used in the TEXT+ node.
12. Tried rendering again:
Successfully rendered with ENCODER set to AUTO.
Also tested with ENCODER set to NVIDIA – worked fine.
13. In my previous setup, Resolve 20 was installed as an upgrade from DR19. It’s unclear if the issue was
related to the upgrade path or OFX plugins, which had already been uninstalled but didn’t resolve the
issue at the time.
14. I plan to reinstall the OFX software one at a time to identify if any of them cause the problem again.
15. I’ll update this post with any new findings.
