Marker Navigation Improvements

PostTue Apr 15, 2025 1:59 pm

The shortcuts for Next/Previous Marker (Shift+Down/Up) should always move the playhead.

The current design flaw is that those navigation shortcuts also act as selection shortcuts, resulting in the playhead not always moving as expected and desired.

Scenario 1: The playhead is at a Marker position, but the Marker is not selected. Hitting the navigation shortcut will not move the playhead. Instead it will simply select that Marker. This is no good. That shortcut was engaged to move the playhead, and that didn't happen.

Scenario 2: Markers are placed on a clip in the Source Viewer, so when added to a timeline those Markers show up on both the Video and Audio portion of the clip. That's fine. BUT...when you hit the navigation shortcut to move the playhead to the next Marker, it doesn't move. Instead, the selection simply changes form the Video Marker to the Audio Marker. This is also no good.

If folks want selection shortcuts, BMD can add them. Navigation shortcuts (Shift+Down/Up) should always navigate, should always move the playhead.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

But I would also add that by default it should NOT add a marker to both the audio and video clips at the same time. I would guess 95% of the time a user would simply want it placed on the video clip if they are in the Edit or Cut page

+1 to Jim’s request.

I agree in principle with not adding markers to the audio. The problem is that it makes sense to add markers to all selected clips under the playhead.

So I think the real issue here is usually when one selects a linked clip one thinks of it as a unit as opposed to several clips. Putting marks on all the clips that make up the linked clip feels wrong and impedes workflow.

I have a suggestion: when a clip is:
- linked, and
- audio and video elements are selected, and
- all the marker info is the same across markers at that point, then:
display only the video marker

Anyone see problems with this algorithm?
