price gouging on ebay

PostThu Oct 25, 2012 5:53 pm

from the other forum:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BlackMagic-Desi ... 19d644cfce

this is the sort of thing that gets a dealer kicked off the authorized list, no?

Well, if a reseller can make twice the money (more actually) by selling to the highest bidder as opposed to shipping to their ranking preorder, I guess there's always going to be people unethical enough to go there.

if this company is an authorised reseller, I would hope that BMD does the right thing and either A)not ship them any more cameras until the pre orders have been fulfilled or B) insist that they dont sell above the $3000 rrp.

If no action was taken, it would make me feel very very disappointed that an authorised reseller could take advantage of the shortage of units in this way.

(I have not been able to check as to whether they ARE an authorised reseller, if they are not, then I guess that's life)

I hope BMD hangs their scalp here in this forum for all to see and honors their preorder list directly.

While I agree with everyone's frustrations....supply/demand is nothing new. The demand is really high and there is no supply. So enterprising individuals can make more money. You can't blame a business for endeavouring to make more profit.

If you lived in a remote region and you were the only videographer available, you would probably charge a pretty penny over what other videographers charge in competition rich environments....such is business.

Now if BM has some sort of pricing policy with it's resellers, that's a different story.

Doubtful BMD will do anything against this seller. More likely they'll just lock this thread to shut down the voice of upset costumers and continue business as usual.

Let's be honest. If we had no interest in the camera and had the chance to make 3000+ for the thing, we'd sell...there were people saying they were going to do just the thing when they got theirs.

Maybe, however, IF they ARE an authorised reseller than a few things are key, first of all, they are able to buy direct from Blackmagic - WE are not. Second, they would have bought it cheaper than we could - seeing as the wholesale price must be lower than the other resellers would sell it at. Here would be one unit that is not being given to someone who pre-ordered and perhaps paid for their camera months ago - instead any one of us is effectively being told that if we still want the camera, its gonna cost us more. As there is a direct link between BMD and the resellers, i think its only proper and right that BMD step in to prevent this happening again, or to stop it as it currently stands.

At the very least, some kind of statement would be good. I think it stinks that if indeed they are a proper reseller, that BMD would associate itself with such unfair practices. What if all the resellers now decide to jack up their prices to make the same bonus profit? This is quite a serious topic, I hope someone official says something soon.

For one people don't know the situation the preorder person could have canceled and the dealer had a free one to sell to the highest bidder. Secondly it's only price gouging when someone is stupid enough to purchase it at said price. Thirdly as long as he didn't sell someones preorder and there is no contractual issues in regards to him selling at x% above the MSRP then he can sell for as much as he wants. If I had one right now I would sell it to just for the fact I know how bad people want it. Has nothing to do with a persons ethics lol. Aren't we quite the judgmental bunch ;)

We are Authorized Blackmagic Resellers and have been for many years. We have been in business since 1994.

This was a mistake, by a new employee.

It was addressed immediately once we discovered the mistake.

Why would an individual employee feel the need to make extra money for the company by selling for double the price "accidentally"? What would their personal incentive be in that story?

Seems very, very odd.

LOL! You;re kidding right?! You guys get a very rare camera and some "new employee" decides to mark it up 200% under your company's ebay account? I can smell the BS coming though my monitor screen. For anybody on this company's waiting list, I would use caution.

Correct. So long as the conversation is kept civil, we have no reason to lock the thread. The other thread descended into chaos even after the dealer came on and explained. Obviously people are welcome to their opinions and so long as they are communicated civilly there is no issue.

Ok guys.. I know this post is a bit old but given the amount of crap we had to deal with for putting a camera on eBay I figured I would post here first before we put another one on there.

Let me make this clear so there is no question what our intent is.

We have a BlackMagic Cinema Camera and NO ONE on our waiting list.. I'm sure the witch hunt on this post had something to do with the fact the four people dropped out.. Thanks for that BTW..

So since we own (bought and paid for) a BlackMagic Cinema Camera and we have no buyers at the moment we are going to exercise our free market rights in the United States of America and "sell" this camera at a profit! IMAGINE THAT?

We are however going to do this in a way that appeals to the greatest amount of people, hopefully including some of the very ones that crucified us here! So here is what we are going to do.

We are going to post this camera on eBay for a starting price of $2995.00 which as you all know is MSRP. The catch is that it will be listed as an "auction only" item with NO RESERVE! What does this mean? Well, quite simply, we will sell the camera to the highest bidder.. If there is only one bid, it sells for $2995 and we are totally fine with that.. Anything beyond $2995 will be a product of supply and demand and dictated completely by the buyer.

I'm sure at least one of you is going to mention this at some point so I am just going to bring it up now: WE DO NOT SHILL BID! IF YOU THINK WE DO GO AHEAD AND REPORT IT TO EBAY!

I have no idea what is going to happen with this auction, it may not even sell for $2995..

In addition to the above, you'd better believe we reserve the right to pull this auction at anytime (within the confines of eBay rules) and sell this camera to a buyer outside of eBay at our sole discretion.

Any questions?

So your saying if I place an order w/ your store http://enhancedviewhd.com/ before the auction is up you'd sell the camera for 2,995 and end the auction early since you'd no longer have the camera right?

That is not at all what I said... Not sure where you got that impression...

Let me be clear: WE WILL SELL THIS CAMERA TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER ON EBAY AND RESERVE THE RIGHT TO PULL THE AUCTION (WITHIN EBAY RULES) TO SELL THE CAMERA TO WHOM WE PLEASE... OR TAKE THE CAMERA AND PUT IT IN A BLENDER FOR THAT MATTER...

So to answer your question directly, NO, YOU WILL NOT GET THIS CAMERA IF YOU PURCHASE IT FROM OUR WEBSITE.

How can you say on your website backordered when you do indeed have stock? I personally thinks this sets a terrible precedent for other resellers to take stock and put it on ebay and take advantage of the situation. You call it simple economics, i call it unethical.

You have stated things quite clearly and everything you have said I am confident is within your rights and your contractual relationships so no problem there. We do appreciate that you have taken your time to explain your approach as it is obvious you are doing your best to be fair and reputable. We understand that.

I hope you have no problem understanding that I personally wouldn't dream of buying anything at all from your website, ever. I hope a couple of other people feel the same but I understand sometimes one risks standing alone on the planet. I have no problem with that. Remember the Alamo. Good luck to you.

Why, have I done something wrong? If so, could you please explain what that is? I put up a camera that I own for "$2995", with no buyers in line.. Posted this to eBay for 24 hours with "NO RESERVE".. Within 30 minutes of putting it up there is one bid..

Please, please, please explain what we have done wrong.
