New Resolve User – Excited to Learn from the Community

PostWed Apr 16, 2025 3:10 am

Hi everyone,
I’m new to DaVinci Resolve and post-production in general, and I’m diving in with a strong interest in editing, color grading, and audio. I’ve started working through the official training materials and am looking forward to learning from the wealth of experience here.

Appreciate any guidance or best practices as I get started, and I hope to contribute back as I grow. Thanks for having me!

I just opened the Reference manual from the Help option in Resolve - it's 4032 pages!!!
I guess I won't be printing it out as a desk reference...

Yup, Already have! :D

I've downloaded all the videos and files into their own folders (Edit, Color, Fairlight, Fusion), as well as all the PDF versions of the books. I've even added the book PDFs to my Kindle, including the Reference Manual!

New Resolve User – Excited to Learn from the Community

I suggest since BMD hasn’t made one that we here make a real FAQ or find a compelling one online and recommend it here.

If nobody else is interested I’m willing to coordinate.

What type of FAQ? There are so many facets to DR that even as a beginner I could see many different areas that could use its own FAQ. Maybe even a dedicated FAQ subforum here.

It’s the organization not the volume of items that’s missing. It’s conceivable that ai could chug on the forum database and make something useful. But I’m not that good a prompt engineer. Anyone else here want to volunteer for that?

The forum is configured rather basically bbcode wise. In particular internal links aren’t supported.

Since a normal FAQ requires them I see why ours is written as a document rather than in FAQ format.

Wish they’d decided to turn on links when they discovered they didn’t work.

I tried this too using ChatGPT. Very unsatisfactory results. Lots of easily discovered answers and none of the really useful ones. Many answers also wrong or hopelessly out of date. Hence my request for human or more expert prompt engineer help.

New Resolve User – Excited to Learn from the Community

PostThu Apr 17, 2025 5:16 am

FAQ means frequently asked questions but more and more corporate faqs are instead lists of advertising points.

Off the top of my head here are a few real FAQs:

Why is Resolve crashing
I paid for Resolve. Why is it saying I’ve reached a limit?
Why can’t I see my picture. I hear the sound
Why am I seeing media offline when it’s obviously right there
Why is playback so slow
Why won’t it run on my xyz computer
What’s the most important hardware to make it run well
How do I customize the UI layout
How do I sync sound

Do these answers sound right to you?

1. Why Is DaVinci Resolve Crashing?
DaVinci Resolve may crash due to several reasons:

Inadequate System Specifications: Ensure your system meets the minimum requirements. For instance, at least 16 GB of RAM is recommended, and 32 GB if using Fusion.

5. Why Won’t It Run on My XYZ Computer?
DaVinci Resolve may not run on certain systems due to:

Unsupported Operating System: Ensure you're using a supported OS version.

Insufficient Hardware: Systems with less than the minimum required RAM, inadequate GPU, or lacking necessary drivers may not run Resolve.

Integrated Graphics: While some integrated GPUs can run Resolve, performance may be limited. A dedicated GPU is recommended.

6. What’s the Most Important Hardware to Make It Run Well?
Key hardware components for optimal performance:

GPU: A powerful GPU with at least 4 GB VRAM is crucial, especially for effects and color grading.
TourBox Tech

RAM: 16 GB is the minimum, but 32 GB or more is recommended for complex projects.

I’ve been doing prompt engineering for a few years now and even the most sophisticated prompt still doesn’t yield the accuracy a human can provide. Unless you kind of know what you’re looking for and have some understanding enough to verify the results are correct, you can get the wrong information.

I made this request but it just got buried and I don’t think it got to Daria.

This is the best, IMO, way to provide training and learning Resolve. I can attest to that because that is how I really got to know how to use the features in Resolve 12, even when I have been using Resolve since V10.

Good luck with the FAQ too.

Well, to the uninitiated this sounds right but … there are several responses that sounded right but are misleading or inconsistent. I just picked one of the responses where it recommends a minimum of 4GB VRAM. Yes, that could work but that’s misleading because it won’t crash DVR is you’re working on a low resolution lightweight codec. Unless you know that information, someone may think that 4GB of VRAM should not crash DVR on his/her 4K project because it’s the recommended minimum. So it sounded correct but you have to know how to interpret and verify. Remember the saying “Trust but verify”. :)

I didn't take it in a cynical way. As I'm sure you're well aware, sometimes what we type and what we mean are two different things. We know the tones and inflections we're trying to convey, but they don't always come out correctly in the written post. I'm notorious for not being able to convey my thoughts correctly.

I guess we can use these as a starting point for a real FAQ project though. Like I said:

Here’s a much more extensive list of questions. Many of the answers can be gleaned from the forum. Probably be good to have links to relevant forum topics in there as well.

These aren’t sorted and categorized but I think they’re a good start. I’m up for creating the answers and making the initial document in html and hosting it probably on Google drive.

Why do I get lots of markers when I only want one
Why is my phone or gaming capture video playing poorly
Why don’t I see any sounds in the sound library
Why doesn’t March grade work
Why doesn’t the color chart work
Where’s the Android version of Resolve
Where are my sound waveforms
I hear clicks in my audio
Audio doesn’t match what’s in my nested timeline

Relink won’t find my media
What’s the bright red offline media mean
What’s the difference between relinking and conforming

New Resolve User – Excited to Learn from the Community

As a new user you’re a great alpha tester for a FAQ but I/we certainly wouldn’t expect you to create it.

The ChatGPT version is still pretty verbose and on the surface. I think it’ll probably be faster and more accurate to “hand code” this right now. Though as we go there may be a way to get ChatGPT involved in streamlining the creation and upkeep.

It sounds to me more like you're interested in making a combination of a FAQ and a Knowledge Base, which is a great idea.

Guess so. These are all frequently asked questions on the forum.

Joe, I agree that hand writing this first is the way to go… possibly even involve the community to help you in answering them. Just keep in mind that, and I think that’s true with you as well, we don’t live in this forum… got to put bread on the table. lol.

Then after it is written, you can use ChatGPT to do the smithing of the text, possibly ask it to find related and relative references to augmented the content. That’s where I think GenerativeAI excels - when you feed into its prompt some answers you already know and have verified. It will generally return more useful results.

Good luck on your efforts.

On a side note...

If anyone needs it, I've extracted just the Speed Editor and Editor Keyboard pages from the DR User Manual and made them available for download via my Dropbox account. Here's the download link: https://tinyurl.com/SpeedEditorManual
