What does Speed Editor Wheel Press do?

PostWed Sep 15, 2021 8:00 am

The wheel on the speed editor clicks down if I press it but that click or press doesn't seem to do anything? Is it supposed to do something?

Good to know. Why did they provide it with the ability to click if its not meant to do anything?

Kind of pointless speculation, but I'd assume it was either an engineering decision to allow for potential future functionality or part of the original design spec for a function that was later removed (or implemented differently)... or maybe it was just what was available parts wise. Doesn't really matter as long as the advertised functions work as expected... tho 'future functionality' support would be my preference!
Let's have a return to the glory days, when press releases for new versions included text like "...with over 300 new features and improvements that professional editors and colorists have asked for."

I think most likely it's because the jog wheel is a re-used part from other BMD hardware, and on the other hardware it did something, but here it does not.

Here's a couple of teardown videos for anyone interested. The first one goes into it in a lot more detail and confirms that there's definitely a switch under there, but it's not 100% clear whether it's wired up or not:

Interesting finding .. I have my Speed Editor for about 2 years now, and it never came to my mind to press the wheel

Hopefully, BMD will release a firmware to enable extra function for that. Or maybe it is reserved for Speed Editor 2 ;)

There is an unused socket on the jog wheel board so I don't think it's actually connected to anything.
