Cache crash

PostMon Apr 14, 2025 11:41 pm

Although Beta 3 is moving forward ..I still that cache is kinda broken.
I find that with a Fusion comp on the timeline .. if I have cache on and then try to amend or update the composite then Davinci will crash (every time and immediately).
I'm also finding that if I connect nodes AFTER the media out node (do just guides and things for viewing)... then Davinci will crash.
Currently I have to work with caching switched off

I tried a Fusion title and can't duplicate the issue. It just works.

Hi Walter
Here is a screen recording which shows the issue.

https://f.io/WvquKks6

it is 100% repeatable. It also is not project dependent, any project.
I have Render Cache on Smart
System is running on Windows 11

Just to add to this ... it is not reserved to the Text tool. It is broken on all Render updates below a rendered cache.
This caught me out hard last night.
I had a whole longform film rendered cache - all good. Then for some exports I needed to tweak gamma - so I add an adjust clip on the top video track put a CST node on the grade ..it quickly re-renders .. all ok until I start doing small fixes and updates on clips on video 1 ... the cache doesn't rebuild, in fact I can delete clips from the bottom layer so that effectively you have black / nothing with a CST adjust clip on say video 2 ...the picture is still there, Davinci plays the cache of clips that no longer exist on the timeline ... spooky!
Meanwhile 5:30am by the time I had that job played out and done :(

I tried it with a regular Title and there I did see the issue. Fusion titles seem to work fine.

I think the issue is cache built on top of cache.

So if you have a clip with a big grade of large RAW that will cache in 'Smart cache' ... then put a regular title on top or adjustment clip that then will build new cache on top .. it works the first time but doesn't realise the need to re-cache if a change happens below.

It worked ok in V19 so I'm fairly sure that it is a Beta 20 thang. I just want it to get on the list for V20.1 as it has a big impact for me

Any takers out there from BMD on this on?

It is quite an awkward issue for me and of course no support on a beta which is fair enough.
If tried different cache formats (as I've seen that in the past) but makes no difference.

It is very persistent - so like the text amend on top of cache is a great example as easy to see and 100% repeatable, also an adjustment effect on top of cache.

BMD will frequently not comment on the issues we report for Beta versions. Fixes just show up in some future update.

Fair enough - just it would be so great to know if they see the issue - otherwise a huge about of time is spent wondering if this is some specific local issue that I should maybe delete all davinci software and caches and try a fresh install.
A simple 'we are aware of the issue, and it will be addressed in a future update' would be so helpful.
What concerns me is that there is no traffic on this problem, and I would expect people to be noticing it. There was a bug fix sort on this in beta 2 but it doesn't seem to have fixed the issue.
If it is a bug .. then cool - I'll sit tight and keep working around it because the gains of V20 are so useful. However, if it isn't a bug .. then I need to get busy trying to clear the issue on my system.

Cache issues are long-standing, and there are many threads complaining. No chance BM are unaware of this.

You can limp-along for now (with the rest of us :D ) by trying render-in-place or quick exports to better view your footage. Sometimes putting an adjustment clip above (or fusion clip set to background mode) does the trick... but not always.

Great ... I'll sit tight and keep on using my workarounds rather than launch a voyage of probably pointless system changes.
Thanks then
