No text editing with animated subtitles

PostSat Apr 05, 2025 3:21 am

Doing any editing to the generated subtitles seems to break the subtitles when applying animation.

If I edit the subs, it shows on the "caption" tab, but in the caption box on the "Track" tab either just shows the originally generated sub text or is blank. Same for what displays on playback

The caption clip on the timeline does show the edited text.

I have tried editing in the "Track" tab's caption box, but no success.

I have done this before and after applying the effect, same results

It seems it just can't let go of the what the AI thinks. If I delete the effect, the subs on playback show the edited text.

I have the same issue.

Steps to reproduce the issue:

1. transcribe timeline
2. "create subtitles from audio"
Image
- Not sure if order here matters -
3. place animation on the subtitle
Image
4. edit the caption on the timeline
Image
5. animation effect continues to have the same words, not the new edited words on the caption

Yep experiencing the same thing. I can almost edit the word by going into Track and right mouse button on the Subtitle, then > Expression - which gives you a + Text("Your words,") which you can update and it changes them in the main viewer, but then doesn't turn off. So, yep not a fix, but might point someone more clever than me to look at that expression.

I have the same problem. I am animating text in Chinese, but when I correct transcription errors the animation keeps the original transcription.

Can you remove the subtitle 'effect', edit the subtitle text and then apply the effect again? The application of the effect probably reads the subtitle data once when applied and isn't refreshed to read it again afterwords. Just a guess.

Yes it's almost a unusable at the moment, you cannot modify any longer the content of the subtitle after you apply the animation effect but also you cannot save the settings of the effect.

Actually any modification you do after generating the sutititles once you apply the animation is gone.

As it is it's totally unusable, it's not that the subtitle generated by DR is perfect.

I wanna try to generate a subtitle with a different AI assistant and import it on DR and see what happes, I'll report back.

Yeah so it's not possible to animate subtitles that are not generated by DR. Odd.

I am experiencing the same problem. Experimented and discovered that if you delete the offending clip on the timeline, it continues to show and play incorrectly on screen and if you disable the subtitle track completely the subtitles still play onscreen. If you remove the animated effect everything acts normal again and disabled clip disapears. Seems like when you add the animated effect that DR creates a clip based on its original transcription and this has no connection to what's being modified on the timeline.

So I tried my suggestion having installed v20 studio - I removed the subtitle track effect, modified the subtitle text which shows as modified on screen and then applied the track effect again - and to my surprise, it restored the auto-generated text from somewhere (obviously not from my edited subtitles). Too bad. I'm sure this is an oversight. We'll see.

I'm really surprised I've watched numbers or reviews on YouTube about DR 20 and all showed how cool the animated subtitles look now. How's is it possible that not even one mentioned that is currently unusable?

I can't imagine. My guess is that our favourite YouTuber's were in such a competitive rush to remain relevant that they didn't go into any great depth with the 100+ new features. I can't blame them - the YouTube algorithm forces this frantic pace. Nevertheless, I've watched the content from all my faves and it has been really illuminating as a starting point for my own exploration. Cheers.

Well this is a beta, it is clearly not finished. But im sure the issue will be resolved soon. It should certainly refresh with timeline subtitles and should work with any subtitles, whether put in manually or made by Davinici Resolve Transcription.

I am expericing the same issue and it is so freaking annoying. I have 100 short clips on a long timeline. I thought hey, let's use this animated Statement effect on all the subtitles and then bake them on the footage, and save ourselves a tonne of time. The effect does its own thing and does not account for any caption editing done. What a **** implementation!! And they had plenty of time by now to issue a fix.

I thought maybe I can export the srt file, corrected, then import it and then apply the subtitled effect, but that doesn't work either. Resolve plays back no subtitle whatsoever when you try to workaround. A cool but very badly implemented feature that makes it useless.

Please Blackmagic. FIX this!

Actually, moving the playhead does update it—but that’s not exactly ideal! And to make matters worse, they’ve introduced another issue: once the text is animated, you can’t adjust any of its parameters. The entire section of the dialog box where those controls are located gets greyed out!

I haven't tried beta 2 as I am in the middle of a project. When it is finished I should look into it. I usually just download whatever upgrade I get asked to download.... I just hope they implement this properly because it is great, I love the "statement" subtitle. but only if you can edit the subtitles and it can freaking read the edits!! WTF! It should be basic common sense, right?

It's still broken. I modifies the AI generated subtitle in two points and at first the animation ignored my edits. Then I played around a little bit and all of subbed it register the first edit but not the second.

I tried on different timelines and different projects. Still the animation ignores any edit to the subtitles. I think they put it in the fixed bug list but didnt really test it.

Also if you import an srt and you apply an animation the surtitles are not shown

Still not working correctly. Its changing some words to capitals and misspelling some words. Its looks ok under Inspector. If a word is already in lowercase but showing on the screen as Uppercase you can remove and add it back as lowercase and it works but you can get crashes doing this.

There's probably some tricks/workarounds that works once out ten times but they havent really fixed it. Playing around with animation actually made DR crash a few times on my system. Until it's really fixed I wont be bother using it again.

I understand it's a beta but what's the point to list it in the fixed bugs when it's exactly as it was. Hopefully they will really fix it at some point or another.

I've only managed to get it to work in combination with the 'refresh/reset' button in the inspector.
If I use that before I type the changes stick. (at least in my limited 20 second tests so far)

Having the same Issue.
None of the edits I've made to the subtitle's text are being reflected after applying the animated subtitle templates ("statement" for instance)
The text shown on screen and in the inspector reverts back to whatever the "create subtitles from audio" feature originally auto-transcribed.

See my previous comment. You first have to sort of refresh the title you want to change before it accepts the change. It's a bit weird but it does work.

What do you mean by "refresh/reset button in inspector", Sander?

ALSO: I have installed a final production version of DRS 20 mid-project (always a bad idea but it worked) only to find that this is still an issue there, too.

I ran into the same problem. I went around it by right clicking on the subtitle track, adding a new subtitle, changing the caption, and lastly adjusting the key frames.
