Audio: separate Left and Right, and Align

PostFri Apr 25, 2025 3:34 pm

Hi,
We have a number of audio files from 2 microphones; one in the left and one in the right. Ultimately, I would like an elegant workflow that aligns 2 tracks and puts one on the left and the other on the right.

I can do it manually but it is laborious. Here are my steps:
On Edit Page, put one audio file on track 1 and the other on track 2.
Then, I align them via waveform.
Then, I go to Fairlight and change the attributes of the 2nd track by making it stereo.

When I drag a Mono audio file in, it is only on the left side. I cannot figure out a way to force the audio to be on the right. That’s why I have to edit the attributes and make track 2 stereo (in order to force audio out the right side).

SOOOO …. is there a much easier way to force audio this??

If we are talking about a file with mic 1 on the left track and mic 2 on the right you can do this. In the Media Pool right click on a clip, open Clip Attributes, and select the Audio tab. Change Format to Mono and tracks to 2, then click Add. You will now get two mono tracks. You can delete the Stereo track by clicking on the bin icon next to it. When you drag the clip to the timeline it will create two mono audio tracks.

I've not tried this with multiple clips selected at the same time.

Hi Charles,
It’s been a while since I posted my question so I’ve made some headway on this. You can actually multi-select clips and make them all stereo at once. Before I did that I relabeled the tracks with an L or R to distinguish between them later. I synchronized them, put them in Fairlight and panned the L’s to the left, etc. Finally I rendered all that out as an audio file. That worked out very well.
