Which Export settings for 4K Gaming Videos / CQP or CBR?

PostSun Mar 30, 2025 9:50 pm

Hi I'm really confused which settings I need for a good 4K Gaming video for Youtube.

I record with OBS in 4K on a 4K Monitor and use these settings:

- mkv. format
- CQP 25
- P4 quality
- Tuning high quality

So it looks kinda good and the file size is okey.

But now I wonder what settings are the best for good quality and not to large file sizes.

I want an MP4 video and AV1 codec for good quality and more compressed file size.
Do I change the quality setting to automatic or restrict the Kb/s to 100K or 200K?

And if so what rate control is the best?
Also CQP but with number or CBR and which settings?

I did an analysis here

Ultimately 60 mbit h.265 seems the sweet spot.

If you have a very good internet connection, directly uploading the DNxHR HQX files works perfectly with YT and saves you the time to encode to h.265.

H.264/5 export from Resolve has had stability issues for years. I and many other users avoid it, export DNxHR HQX or PR 422 and transcode to H.265 with FFMPEG.

If you have hardware encoding for AV1, you can use that. But it doesn't provide any quality improvements, so I would just stick to h.265 for a few more years

I have just tested AV1 export with my latest file. I used below settings

Normally, when export to h.265 I choose 30000 Kb/s but in this case I chose 20000 Kb/s and with the same file instead of 7,48GB I got 5,15GB with quality of the image that seems to be still ok.
I am wondering what settings are you using guys. Maybe there are ways to get less size and better quality at the same time.
